I believe Liam Cullen is top scorer in the national under 18s league. He hasn't had a chance with the under 23s yet.

Liam Cullen has certainly been banging the goals in for the U18s - in a side that's currently bottom of the league. The U18s are stratified by geography, so Swansea's league contains Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs. The U23s league has two divisions, with the Swans just missing out on promotion to the top division last season. They are currently top of the second division.
It's far too early to say whether or not Cullen - or Roberts - will make the grade, but the signs are promising. I see the academy system as providing an "academic" training, whereas the loan system gives essential real-world experience alongside gnarled old pros. Those that excel in an academy setup might struggle with a real environment, so the success of the likes of Woodburn is by no means guaranteed.

Thanks for the link. What a refreshing attitude. Between him and Harry Wilson, we are certainly not short of leaders on the field!

Liam Cullen played for Swansea u23s on Saturday and scored played the full 90 mins so might explain his lack of sharpness, don`t suppose there is any footage lurking around somewhere?

Considering it was his 18th birthday today, the extra 120 minutes of playing time might dampen his celebrations later tonight ;-)

A question for Swans fans I suppose. Is there still big things expected of Liam Cullen? I thought he could break through as our goal scorer a few years back

Scored two today, in an otherwise woeful display at home (losing to West Ham 2-4). Only saw his second (deep into stopage time), which was a true beauty. Haven't heard a lot about him since he was touted as the next great break-through when he was 15. What are the thoughts of @jaspert and alarch about him?

Took an age to adapt to u23s after being lethal in u18s football (had a couple of niggles and was played out on the wing more often than not his first full season, which didn't help) and while he's got a good scoring record contributes very little to games otherwise. We thought we had a player that would be dominating development (if not senior) games by the time he turned 20 but that's not the case. I expect him to be released at the end of the season because he's on big money and even if we weren't slashing costs throughout the academy he doesn't justify it. Doesn't have the athleticism of Connolly at Brighton who was the only player to score more than him in PL2 football last season, and it's worth noting that most top development strikers only play half a season of games due to loans/first team commitments, hence the low totals - McBurnie did that for us, Byers scored as many as Cullen in a full season but from midfield. Doesn't even start up top for Wales u21s ahead of wingers like Harris and Broadhead. Hopefully he can find a League Two/non-league side wanting to play a poacher instead of a big centre forward. Certainly knows where the goal is.

He played in central midfield, for the full 120 and that was after playing a full 90 minutes the day before. Remember thinking that by jove this is a keeper ...

Yes. Needs to play some proper competitive games. He may be needed in the Swansea squad if Ayew goes though. Rest of the season at Wrexham? I would have thought that his credentials are strong enough (11 goals in all competitions) for him to play at League One or Two level. If Ayew leaves he's the closest Swansea have to a like-for-like right winger-cum-striker. A late move in the transfer window may be in the offing.

If either Baston or Ayew go, then he'll get half a look in I think. If they don't, then hopefully a League 1 loan.

I hope he gets first team opportunities soon anyway, surprised to find that he's only 20, I've heard his name mentioned for years now! He could join Toshack Junior out in Cyprus according to this: www.google.com/amp/s/the72.co.uk/154670/swansea-city-striker-liam-cullen-wanted-by-european-side-pafos/amp/

Steve Cooper's spoke about him positively about him today, looks like he's set to sign a new contract with the view to going out on loan until the end of the season.
"Liam is in our plans. He's a talented boy. I feel like he's spent too long in the under-23s. That's my feeling on him and on one or two others. We've quickly got to find a programme in men's football for him, whether it's with us or on loan. I'm only interested in his football development because he's a player I'd love to give an opportunity at some stage. He isn't far away from that, the way he's going. He's a really likeable lad as well with a very good personality and good confidence."

I said in the Matt Smith thread that if he’s going back to Twente then we have to look at Cullen as they are only one place beneath them in the league and we gave James Lawrence an opportunity . We can’t afford to put our noses up at any player playing in the top flight of any of Europe’s top 10 leagues. Liam is doing well and will get a cap one day if he carries on like this. When it comes to CB our options aren’t as strong as the attacking ones

Borja Baston sold on, nobody coming in so I imagine Liam is now seen as our back up striker.

A lot of games this months so might get more than 2 minutes next time to give Cooper's boy Brewster some rest.
