His cultural connection to Wales and understanding of the players & the people made him the perfect man for the job at the time. However, Bale really was the ace in the hole. Without him I don't think the team had enough goals in it to get us qualified no matter what system we played. We'd have got close because we were solid. But without Bale we potentially lose to Andorra, draw to Belgium, draw to Cyprus, and then we don't qualify.
He did well with Fulham, and believe he did okay at Sociedad too? Aside from that his record isn't great. I can't see much of a future for him in management but I think he'd make a great pundit. Very charismatic and a good talker

I agree. Without Bale the Andorra result might have been the end of Coleman before things started to turn in his favour.
And that winning goal at home v Belgium was one of Bale's greatest moments - perhaps his biggest moment in a Welsh shirt. No it wasn't spectacular, but anyone other than a world class talent would not have scored that. Courtois, and elite keeper, had attempted to bluff Bale by staying back - a clever move that would have worked 90% of the time, as a lesser player would have rushed to try and play it over the keeper's head. Bale somehow found time to check Courtois' position, bring the ball down and finish it. Absolutely incredible.
Without those moments, we wouldn't be where where we are now, and the same goes for Coleman's reputation. Though I do believe that somewhere during the 16 qualifying campaign, Coleman's mentality transformed (or at least, his public speaking did). It went from "we'll do our best, we're a small nation and we'll do what we can" to "we're here to win and to qualify". And it made a difference.

Just to add to the Bale stuff, the awareness that Courtois had bluffed combined with the awareness that he then rushed out and Bale just slid it under him, absolutely world class! But yeah agree overall

You can clearly see him take a glance before he controls the ball. Not enough to know exactly where Courtois is, but enough to suggest that he wasn’t coming out for it.
