Football Gods seem to be smiling down upon us 😇
Hopefully, Giggs can seize this opportunity and the away fans will not be penalised for the away match in Bratislava.

Wilson is a big Messi fan, he probably likes to model his game on him and pick and choose his involvement. He clearly puts a lot of thought into the game.
It's a bit frustrating for us to watch pretty anonymous performances but as long as he's scoring goals then I guess we can't complain.
I'm hoping having Ramsey in the side will get Wilson more involved though.

I like him but he needs to be doing a LOT more in games. When he’s not scoring he offers absolutely nothing. Not a patch on Brooksy.

Although he's more of a natural winger than Jonny Williams, I'd be tempted to start Williams on the right, in a 4-2-3-1, and bring Wilson on after 60 minutes or so. We need to hassle Slovakia out of their stride - because they have the quality in the middle of the park to dominate proceedings if they're allowed to.

Given that Hamsik tends to play on the left side of a midfield three, having Williams closing him down could be a smart move. Even though Slovakia have a number of good attacking players Hamsik makes them tick - nullify him and we're half way there. Incidentally, after Charlton beat Leeds the other day, Bielsa singled out Williams' effectiveness in nullifying Phillips - something very few players have managed, judging by this account: www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/menace-jonny-williams-job-leeds-17001141. When Williams went off Leeds were well on top. Given this role in winning the ball back against Belarus in the first half that led to the goal (quite apart from his subsequent forward run and assist) and Wilson's excellent earlier opportunity from an Allen/Williams combo winning the ball back, we know Williams can do a similar job for Wales.

If the last international break taught me anything, it's that Jonny merits a place over Wilson come what may.

One action can definitely win games, the other provides a slight occasional nuisance for the opposing team. Give me a Le Tissier/Koumas any day over someone like Vokes.

With Wilson fit, he starts for me. I've come round to the idea that Jonny Williams will be a good replacement for Ramsey as we manage his game time during this international break. Hopefully we can go up in Slovakia, take Ramsey off around the hour mark for Jonny and see it out. Wilson has the ability to win a match from nowhere (see Ireland away).

Generally agree - and this is largely the case with Bale. He often contributes next to nothing but then will produce one or two key moments. There's no problem with that as such, as long as those vital contributions take place on a regular enough basis i.e. even if you're not doing anything all game, that you produce a killer pass or a finish in most games. The difficulty with wilson is that he is the type of player that doesn't contribute to the overall game, but he also hasn't provided the decisive moments often enough in a Wales shirt. He's done it for us once (against ireland away) in probably around ten games. That is simply not consistent enough. Even with derby, he went through a spell of around a dozen games last season where he contributed nothing, and I suspect it will be the same this season. Lesser teams like us cant afford to carry a player like that.

He's had good opportunities against Slovakia and Croatia to produce decisive moments and hasn't come up with the goods. I'd rather have Joniesta on the pitch at the moment safe in the knowledge that he will deliver and all round effective performance.

I watched the Azerbaijan back a few nights ago, and Wilson did seem better in his harrying (pardon the pun) and tackling. But I don't think he's very good at it, and his frustration showed in that stamp where he was extremely lucky not be sent off. Can't see him lasting in the Premiership if I'll be honest. I've noticed a few cherries fans on twitter already mentioning his lack of effort, tracking back and teamplay.

I was always taught that even the best players need to earn the right to play.
Put the hard work in on the pitch and you'll be able to express yourself.
There's a little feeling about Wilson that he thinks he's already made it. Maybe because he came through at a massive club.

Agreed - as alarch mentioned at the time - having four out and out forwards meant we didn't have enough people to retain possession. We need a balance between those who like to get on the ball and build up play with, for want of a better word, finishers. Lawrence, Bale, James and Wilson are all finishers - two of those four are, however, extremely inconsistent in their ability as finishers. So going forward, we should start three of those type of players. Given that Brooks is out of the picture and Lawrence is where he's at, I'd still play Wilson as one of the front 3 for want of a better option, but I'd bring in Rambo if fit (Joniesta if not) in place of Lawrence.

Bit of an update for you lot on Wilson's progress this season.
I've seen enough of him now to know that he will never be a top level winger. He's not involved nearly enough in general play, he offers absolutely no defensive support to his fullback, he's not particularly quick or skillful on the ball either.
However, as a No10/centre mid, or even a second striker, I can see him being much more useful. None of his qualities suit being a winger in the premier league. He might have gotten away with it for Derby in a worse league, but if you're not physical, athletic or skillful enough in the premier league you get found out quite quickly.
He's generally seemed to me to be quite an intelligent player, who very rarely takes the wrong option on the ball; he has good ball control, a very good eye for slide rule passes, and an excellent shot. These aren't the attributes of a wide midfielder. This might sound harsh but I don't think I've seen him do a single useful thing on the wing; but when he drifts inside he looks like a completely different player.
Brooks is another player who I think should be a No10, but he can also be a very effective winger due to his speed and trickery, as well as his willingness to track back and make tackles. Wilson certainly isn't a terrible player on the wing, but I think he's being wasted out there for us. And this is more of an Eddie Howe problem than a Wilson problem, because he seems to hate any formations with a dedicated No10 in them.
A lot of our fans are sick of our 442 now, and want to see a 433. I can see Wilson being very effective as the most advanced member of this midfield 3, but idk if we'll ever actually see that tbh.

Most of Wilson’s goals come from picking up the ball in central areas as well. His shooting ability is definitely wasted out wide in my opinion, and from a Welsh perspective he would be a great option for us if he evolved into more of a 9 or a poacher type striker.

Happy to be corrected, but I can't think of anyone who's ever evolved into a poacher.
You've either got it at a young age or you haven't.

John Charles? This is a bit tongue in cheek because I never saw him play (and it was a totally different era) but wasn't he a defender for a fair while before being moved up top?

Yeah I just think his all-round play fits the mold of a Dele Alli-esque second striker (back when he was playing there for Spurs he was incredible) rather than a winger. Although from the Wales perspective, with his finishing ability, he could definitely work well alongside someone like Moore and his knockdowns, the classic little and large combo!

Trouble is, when we've started him centrally he's also been pretty anonymous. I just think he's not that good unfortunately. He has a couple of excellent attributes, but there are too many areas missing in his game to make him a top quality player in any position

He’s not got a lot of pace, a great shot and a decent pass, how is that a winger? More worryingly, how has Eddie Howe not realised this or is he just trying to show horn him into the team?

No offence, but I think you both have quite an old fashioned view of a winger There are plenty of wingers who aren't that pacy and don't look to beat a man. He's the type of winger who looks to cut in and use his wand of a left foot to score screamers, deliver crosses or play people through. That's where he always played in the liverpool academy and that's where he made a name for himself. You both might be right, he may be a more natural no.10, but I don't think the lack of pace is in itself a definitive answer. Also, the evidence from when he has played as a 10 (azerbaijan anyone?) hardly suggests he suits that position either.

The thing is though he hasn’t got much of a cross on him either, so can’t even play the Beckham role of crossing early without beating the man. That leaves him basically cutting inside and shooting 90% of the time which must be so easy to defend against for the better organised teams because you know exactly what he.’s going to do because there’s no way in hell he’s getting on the outside and beating someone for pace. He has a lot more options playing at 10 although it is a fair argument that if he doesn’t score his contributions are usually somewhat limited.
