Wales wonderkid Ben Woodburn wins Liverpool FC academy award www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/wales-wonderkid-ben-woodburn-wins-13011933Wales wonderkid Ben Woodburn has won Liverpool's Academy Players' Player of the Season award. The 17-year-old enjoyed a magnificent campaign having broken into the Reds' first team, making his debut as a late substitute in Liverpool's 2-0 Premier League victory against Sunderland in November. Just three days later he became the club's youngest ever goalscorer - at the age of 17 years and 45 days - when he netted in a 2-0 EFL Cup win over Leeds United at Anfield. He continued to excel for the club's Under-23 side, ending the campaign with eight goals to finish as the joint-eighth top scorer in Premier League 2. Woodburn was handed his full first team debut in Liverpool's 0-0 FA Cup third round draw with Plymouth Argyle at Anfield in January and his rapid rise during the 2016-17 campaign earned him a call-up to Chris Coleman's Wales squad for their World Cup qualifier against Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in March. The youngster - who is yet to be capped by Wales' first team - made his full league debut for Jurgen Klopp's men at Stoke in April, just a week before he was nominated for the prestigious Golden Boy award, a gong - previously won by the likes of Wayne Rooney, Sergio Aguero,Paul Pogba and Lionel Messi - given to players under the age of 21 who have been the most impressive during the course of the season. And his magnificent season was capped off in style at Liverpool's annual awards ceremony where was named as the academy's best player for the 2016-17 campaign. "I'd just like to thank everyone who voted for me to win this award, it means a lot," said Woodburn. "I'd also like to thank my family and the staff of Liverpool who have helped me achieve what I have this season."

Woodburn back on the bench against West Ham. Whether he gets any game time is another matter.

Woodburn back on the bench against West Ham. Whether he gets any game time is another matter. pretty much the only attack minded player on the bench. So if anyone gets injured - perhaps he will get the nod. klopp is going full out with all guns blazing today, as they need to improve their goal difference

www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-fc-teen-star-ben-13094989“My mum’s dad is Welsh and ever since I started with Wales they have been great to me. “I knew all the lads there and the coaches make it so welcoming. Ever since then I’ve wanted to play for Wales. “I like it there, I love playing for Wales and I don’t want to be anywhere else. I didn’t really consider switching.” -- Coleman is known to have had regular contact with Woodburn’s parents, Chris and Alison, who are the proud owners of the Liverpool shirt Woodburn was wearing when he broke Michael Owen’s record to become Liverpool’s youngest scorer with an EFL Cup winner against Leeds at the end of 2016. “It’s a gift to my parents for all the support they have given me over the past 10 years. I need to give a bit back to them,” said Wodburn (cracking typo here - WalesOnline are crap aren't they), who revealed he celebrated that night by playing FIFA at a friend’s house while trying to recreate the goal. “All my family have been great. They know how it is and I know how it is. “There’s no point getting too excited. I’ve not really done much yet. I’ve still got a long way to go. I want to carry on developing and playing my best and see where it takes me.”

Woodburn and Hennessey both to start today in the friendly match in Hong Kong. No Jonny Williams on the bench (but was taken on tour) - Think Ledley stayed at home? KO 1.30pm on Sky Sport
HALF TIME UPDATE: Ben having an excellent game and really embracing his mid-field floating role (mainly from the left). He fed a few superb through balls into Salah and Sturridge's feet.
Hennessey had a few great saves as well as one typical fumble ...

Liverpool Echo's view on Ben's performance:
Ben Woodburn 6
Another midfield slot for Woodburn, perhaps a sign of where Klopp sees his future. Lovely ball to pick out Sturridge in the box. You’d like him to show more confidence as he seems to keep it very simple.

Interesting that he's played almost entirely in a cm role and has been in their first team for each friendly so far. He's a great passer of the ball but not the quickest, so I can see him taking up more of a central role in future. He's definitely in the mould of coutinho - Klopp might be planning on using him as his back-up for the coming season. The only criticism I would have is that he doesn't always get as involved in games as he could. However, the more he plays the more confident he'll get and prepared to demand the ball more often.

Eh???
Woodburn and Wilson are being given chances to impress at a huge Premier League team so why "shame its at that club though"?
If they were at MU or Chelsea or Citeh they wouldn't get a look in.
Yeah it's a real "shame" they are being given a chance in the first team at LFC!!!!

I have to say, I was delighted with Southgate's attitude to Woodburn (and Zaha et al). We are on different sides, but we both surely know that you shouldn't have to "sell" playing for your country (whether that be your country of birth or country you feel affiliated to) - it's just "there". England have had a golden summer in the age groups, and I fully expect some of them will jump ship (and play for other countries), but those that do, can frankly f off and do one - they are not players I'd want to watch anyway. Got very limited credentials, but I love Southgate's attitude.

I remember that idiot on talksport Adrian ' Wales will never qualify for a tournament, fact' Durham saying that we were trying to brainwash players like Ampadu at a young age rather than letting them make there own minds up. However Osian et al have clearly said to these boys 'go to both camps and see where you feel most at home'. This is fair enough. Ampadu has been in both camps and was under no obligation or contractual agreement to return but he did of his own accord. Surely parents will play a big role in this e.g. Johnny Williams - brought up and born in England but feels 100% Welsh.

Does anyone know if any of the American channels is showing the Liverpool v Leicester Hong Kong final later in the evening tomorrow? KO is 1.30pm, its on Sky but I'm working ;-(
UPDATE: I didn't get to see the match, for judging by the goals, it was all over by half time anyway. King and Lawrence came on after half time and Ben only came on after 56 minutes.
Can't blame Klopp for starting with the little Brazilian ... I only hope PSG or some other Qatari sheikh pulls their cheque book out and grabs him. Still. Cream will always rise to the top eventually ;-)

Hoping Woodburn gets a loan move this year, think a low Premier club could really benefit from having a player of his quality in their team. Even Championship, but i hope for his development (as long as he plays) that he goes to a Premier club.

Came on for last 13mins and assisted Sturridge's goal. Great assist. And it might be even better, as it looked like Sturridge may have pulled a hamstring while scoring his goal! Considering he only had 12 minutes on the field, Ben looked really good and sharp. Was played on the right wing again

Get the chance, look at woodburn's goal today... right foot left foot finish .. future Great composure, it's hard to remember how young he is sometimes. With Lallana out and Coutinho potentially on his way, he could be getting as much game time as he did at the end of last season.
