Is this evidence that something is wrong with the you development structure of the English pyramid? Klopp was renowned at developing youth in Germany. Yet at Liverpool, he appears to be holding players back. Is the Premier League simply too competitive for it to also be a productive breeding ground for young players? Perhaps in England (and English based Welsh clubs), the category system needs an immediate review. Perhaps it should be down to the FA and FAW to make sure that all pro clubs are up to scratch with their DVP systems and ditch the monopoly of Category One teams? I can see why they opted for the system that they have, but it doesn't seem to be working. I think it would only work if the standard and competitiveness of the top two divisions was much lower. The category system makes it pointless for non-Category 1 clubs to have an academy What a succinct and pertinent statement. So much truth to it. I wouldn't want an American draft type system. But perhaps the answer is that funds from league profits are re-distributed to make sure more and more clubs, who prove their worth, are helped to elevate to category one status?

If only Cardiff lost their next supposed superstar to Man City before he played a first team game as they were in a higher category. I remember reading that Brentford and other clubs had shut down their academies as bigger clubs just took any decent players I don't think clubs should be allowed to take players into their academies until they're 11 years old. That's when they start playing competitive parks football and they go to secondary school, clubs are signing 5 year olds, its ridiculous!

Surely the player hasn't really benefited either. I think he would've had a few shots at the first team this year because of Kadeem Harris's injury. Would love to be proved wrong and for him to do an Ampadu, but I'm sure that won't happen.

Fairplay the only managers in the premiership who deserve any sort of credit for playing young players are Arsène Wenger & Mauricio Pochettino.

Swansea 1 - 0 Liverpool
Klopp could have done with a bit of youthful enthusiasm off the bench tonight. Just saying.

In fairness I just think Klopp doesn't think he's ready The writing was in the wall when they got Solanki. He has played youngsters like Gomez and Alexander Arnold and also Solanki a bit
.Maybe some are guilty of getting carried away on here as he hasn't done an awful lot yet. A loan will tell has a lot more about his prospects

Shame that, he needs games and seems to behind Ings and Solanki as well as the 3 that start.
Looks like he is shipping Sturbridge out.
You never know he may bring someone in and let Ben get some games elsewhere

With both Coutinho and Sturridge now away, is it finally the time for our kid to shine?
UPDATE 4 February
5 Live reporting that Lallana has had a set back in his return from injury. Shame, that ...

I’d love him to get some game time either at Liverpool or elsewhere. There’s promise to fulfil.

Klopp said in an interview that woodburn is very close to 1st team squad, hopefully will at least make the bench v Porto,. I did think he’d be better off out on loan but klopp clearly rates him, and training with firmino and salah isn’t going to hurt him

This is an interesting, and could be very significant part of the article: "Woodburn, often deployed on the left of a front three last season, has dropped back more this year and the Reds seem keen to exploit the creative side of his passing game. Pace has never been the number one asset in his game either and dropping back makes that less of an issue than trying to get past a packed defence further forward." His lack of pace has been one of my main concerns in terms of preventing him from becoming a top class winger/forward, so playing further deep or more centrally, perhaps similar to coutinho, could be the way forward. Maybe that's why he hasn't been sent on loan and why he hasn't featured much with liverpool - because they're working on changing his game

I remember reading 3 or 4 weeks back on a Liverpool blog that Ben is almost always the 19th man in the match day squad, as he is so versatile. Thus, a constant stand-by in case someone gets injured during pre-match warm-up etc.

Currently playing in the hole in the UEFA Youth League v Man Utd at Prenton Park on BT Sport 2. Lovely glancing header for the opener too.

Dragon Soccer reporting :
“Ben Woodburn is out, that’s pretty much all,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com when asked for a squad fitness update.
“It’s still from when he was ill last week. He is still suffering from that, with cramps in his calf and stuff like that. That’s why we have left him out of training. That’s all.”

Liverpool have a midfield injury crisis at the mo. If Woodburn has recovered from his minor knock, there's a chance he may finally feature make a PL appearance for this season...

If Wijnaldum is fit he'll definitely start ahead of Woodburn. Has to be a loan move next year to a champ club like Harry Wilson.

Youth player Curtis Jones (I think) on the bench for Liverpool. (Googling Curtis Jones shows an English youth alliegence ) Big shame that an opening arrives for young Ben and he isn't able to seize on it. Hopefully in the upcoming games perhaps...

Looks like that Curtis Jones' first appearance for the U23 only came in January ... So doesn't look good for our Ben. Also, i was surprised that Ben didn't feature in our Final v Uruguay. Perhaps, simply, a drop in form?
Perfectly acceptable, considering his tender age and undoubtedly, Ben will come back stronger and more mature next season.

I wouldn't worry mate, recent reports online say he's injured. Perhaps he got a knock in China? I think he would be on the bench today if not. Shame he isn't available as he hasn't made a PL appearance this year I don't think.
