Great to hear! Just needs to rack up some goals and assists now, then I'm sure his confidence will sky rocket and he'll get right back on track

Playing well in the Edinburgh derby He is driving play forward, extremely creative and fired a long range effort that just went over the bar. Watching this then you'd wish he was subbed on versus Estonia as he has shown something that was a bit lacking in that match. He or Johnson should have been brought on for Wilson not Joniesta Lets hope he stays fit as their is a very good player in there. Can't disagree with that, I'm still annoyed Page didn't bring on a creative player like Woodrbun or Johnson instead of one of the holding midfielders around the 60-70min mark. We could have had another Austria moment

I watched up until he went off. The standard wasn't fantastic, but having never really watched SPL games before, it was quite exciting, high tempo football. Are all games like that?

That was an Edinburgh derby, sadly not all the games are like that. A few years ago James Maddison went up to Aberdeen, got some much needed games under his belt, returned to Norwich in the Championship and really tore it up to earn a move to Leicester where he has of course done really well. I think Woodburn needs a good run of games up there and then maybe look at a loan or permanent move to a Championship club, it's not going to happen for him at Liverpool, it might do one day but that would probably after 4 years of solid regular football, he needs to get out of there.

I do wonder whether Harvey Elliott's injury might have a baring on Woodburn. Hope he gets a full season in Scotland, but if he does well and comes back he could fill that spot in the squad, as it looks like Elliott will be out for at least a year

Woodburn is 21 and hasn't been given many opportunities over the last few years, whereas Elliot is only 18 and already being integrated into the senior side - same for Curtis Jones. They'll be hoping he does well on loan - to increase his value, and probably sell him off next summer.

I think his contract with Liverpool expires in the summer, so to be fair to them I think they have let him go out purely for his own development. I just really hope he doesn't fall into the trap and renew his contract there. I think clubs outside England will be able to sign him on a pre-contract in January, so hopefully a half decent club from Europe comes in for him then.

Still don't think it's a good place for Welsh players to be. Wilson, Woodburn and Williams all promising youngsters who are not / didn't get anywhere at the club.

Agree, there's too much pressure on kids coming through at Liverpool to do it every week if they come through because there are World Class players in every position. For me if a player hasn't broken into the first team picture by 20/21 just get out, permanently, the problem is money, I can imagine Neco Williams earns a decent wage for someone who doesn't play much.

Just look at Moore's trajectory, or Vardy's, or Kane's even (didn't make a name for himself until 22/23). I agree with you that he's unlikely to be a first team player with Liverpool, but only because that's the case for more than 99% of professionals. It's not as simple as - Elliott is 18, will continue to improve, and become a fixture of the first team vs Woodburn's a couple of years older and out on loan = he has no chance and they they don't see a future for him. Elliott may have seen his career stalled (even before the injury), like Curtis Jones has to an extent and like Woodburn did at Elliott's age, whilst Woodburn may really kick on this season. The point I'm making is player development is much more a case of fits and starts than this linear trajectory that most people seem to think.

I hope Neco gets the hell out of there as soon as possible. I'd rather all our players avoided the big clubs completely until they're established first team regulars. The sooner Ampadu leaves Chelsea, Neco and Woodburn leave Liverpool, Smith leaves Man City, etc the better as far as I'm concerned. The clubs can send them out on as many loans as they like, but at the end of the day all of those players would probably be better players now had they moved to lesser clubs when they were 18ish and got regular and consistent minutes in the Championship/lower Premier League from that age. As it stands most of our brightest hopes for the future are at the mercy of their greedy parent clubs who only care about increasing their value by sending them on loan then selling them off. I reckon Wilson would be a much better and more consistent player now, and would probably have earned a move to the Premier League, had he moved to Hull or Derby on a permanent transfer rather than a loan a few years ago.

Funny, in English Premier league matches the Scottish players always seem to come out with by far the highest ratings!

Yeah, didn't seem to be directly involved in any of the goals, but still came out with the highest rating and played the full 90. It's been an encouraging start, hopefully he'll get quite a few goals/assists soon too

He has only just turned 22! With each passing game you can see him emerging as the player we believed he could be You wait until he starts striking those thunderbolts which he was typical for in his early years Should be a regular in our squads again. He is different to what we have and others a much more attacking threat and versatility compared to players like Joniesta. Great day for Welsh youngsters today Ben, Issac and Johnson!

I think ultimately he will start to get back into our squads and start replacing the likes of Jonny as he continues to progress. Every chance he could still be an important player for us, I do feel he ought to get a permanent move after this loan though

Brilliant to see, but just one point of caution. Lots of Hearts fans were slagging him off before the game and complaining about him being selected after he hadn't scored (or assisted I believe) in about 10 games this season. So he still has a lot to prove before we consider bringing him back in imo. He needs a good stretch of games where he's producing the goods on a fairly regular basis. Hopefully yesterday's game will give him the confidence to do that.
Disagree on the comparisons with Joniesta too, they're completely different players. Woodburn doesn't offer the drive from midfield and thus the step up in tempo that Jonny can provide from the bench. So for me Joniesta provides something different to everyone else we have available and should continue to be in squads for those reasons

Totall disagree with you.
From an attaching perspective Woodburn has far more tools to offer than Joniesta.
I love Joniesta but he is too limited when we have more attacking options. Dribbling with the ball and getting fouls is simply not enough at the top level. You also need an end product. Woodburn can drive play forward and can finish it from 1 yard or smach it in from 40 yards/ I'd rather have him on the bench if we need a goal!
Ampadu another youngster doing well today!
Shame our central defenders are having zero game time! Who would have thought two relatively decent 6ft 4inch central defenders would just be left sitting on the bench. I prary they both move soon
