I know a lot will probably rubbish this. But if Lawrence, the clubs' captain and one of their stand out players manages to keep Derby up this season, it will probably go down as one of the best achievements I've seen from a Welsh player. Absolutely - one for the ages if he helps them pull it off

I wonder if he's improved so much this season because he such an accomplished former striker as his manager. I know that it isn't a given that a player that was once a great striker will become a great manager, but it's quite coincidental that Lawrence has hit the form of his life while playing under one. Probably a factor but for me there are two obvious reasons that call to mind Occam’s razor: 1. He’s the captain, loves the club and knows he needs to step up more than ever 2. He’s going to be sold, he knows he’s going to be sold and how well he focuses and applies himself is how well he’s going to do out of his next transfer. Either way, phenomenal shift he’s put in at the moment. Even with the points deductions you’d fancy reading to go down over Derby as it stands.

Correction- reading the Derby forum he’s out of contract at the end of the season. So he’s playing for his future (although there’s no way he won’t get a handsome offer and move up the table, question is how high up will he move?)
Also has been nominated for the PFA player of the month along with Harry Wilson, decent news from a Wales perspective with the play off on the horizon.

Never been a massive fan of Rooney and have no feelings either way regarding Derby, but I must admit I'm finding myself willing them on to do it, especially with Lawrence spearheading the charge.

I think Rooney's doing a very good job and Lawrence is having a very good season, but just to provide some balance: if they had not been deducted any points they would be on 39 from 30 now and in 15th - so a mid to bottom table side. Unless I'm mistaken, their team is largely made up of players with decent championship experience alongside one or two youngsters that have had to come through. The most impressive achievement may be around how they've managed to keep morale high rather than the actual points accumulated with the players at their disposal. So I would say it would be a great achievement, but perhaps slightly exaggerated

That assumes that players' form are entirely based on their attitude and want to play well. I think that's naive. I know everyone likes a good narrative, but more often than not it's bollocks. It's much more likely that things have just clicked for him this season, and he probably himself doesn't know why.

All the bench barring the keeper all academy players as well. Of the 21 players they have within their squad maybe 9 are over the age of 21. That's been the story for most of the season. It is one hell of a feat all things considered.

Let’s be fair if he had a bad season this season then his career would be on the verge of tanking. There is a whole wealth of evidence just from my local football club of players who play out of their skin when on loan where their future is at stake vs the form they display when they have a long term contract and their future is reasonably secure for a while. A player whose future is at stake is surely far more likely to display better better form than one whose isn’t. There’s a possible Wales World Cup, Derby survival and a new pay day on the line for him this season. I’m not buying it that his amazing form is “just because”. Maybe not something he’s consciously aware of, but it will be somewhere in his subconscious if nothing else.

They are not in good shape on paper.

You're making out as if a lack of motivation has been behind his patchy form over several seasons, but it just doesn't add up. He came in for a big fee and with some reputation and would have seen Derby as a good stepping stone to get to the next level after coming through the ranks at Man U. Despite that, he's received a lot of criticism for his performances from the fans. So I would imagine that would be enough for him to give it his all. He was fighting for a Euros place last season and that didn't stop him from being rubbish for 90% of it. There's a constant attempt to explain reasons behind why players do well at certain clubs and not others, why they go through certain periods of good form and don't sustain it. The same type of explanations always come up, but there are far too many examples of random events in football to neatly package them into those sort of narratives. Look at Jake Cassidy - he was one of the best players in League one for half a season at the age of 20 or so, but has since struggled for goals in the fifth and sixth tiers. Sometimes things click, and other times they just don't work out.

I get that it can sometimes literally be random (ie the absence of any other factor that might provide an inducement) but in this particular case you’re saying that the fact a player has produced his best form when he’s out of contract at the end of the season and during a World Cup year is just 100% coincidence. It’s like you’re completely ruling out the concept of a player ever playing for their future, it’s just some random form that happened at just the right time completely by coincidence.

Nope - not at all. Commenting purely on the way I see it within a footballing context. He's having a good season and deserves to be in the next squad. However, he was terrible for the first half of last season and then got a bad injury which kept him out for a few months. He came back towards the end and had a good spell of 4 or 5 games. Looking at his numbers, he scored three and assisted once in 24 games, and I'm pretty sure all but one of his goals came at the end. So for the first 20-odd games, he was terrible. I'm not just going off the numbers either, he was getting a lot of stick for his performances up until his injury

Rooney says in the article it's something from when Page managed him for the U21s? I'd be surprised if that was true Either way, I think this is just Rooney trying to drum up interest and put a few million more onto Lawrence's price tag. Derby will need to sell their best assets, and saying you have a Welsh international probably helps. Rooney specifically mentions that Lawrence is one of Wales' best players too - seems like that's the motive

Alot of gossip now with PREFFERD BIDDER 🙄 Rooney talking of staying even if we go down and Tom would stay if Rooney does .. We will see
Tom having best at Derby and playing well. That penalty must been some pressure on him.. Said to few of the Tom Lawrence haters at Derby he will keep us up (jokingly) after he got captain arm band. Which was big shock. He will score winner v Cardiff to keep us up. Statue of Rooney and Tom then 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Derby County manager Wayne Rooney says Wales boss Robert Page needs to "get over" his "history" with Tom Lawrence and recall the Rams captain. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61058712Wonder what the 'history is'? Honestly, he’s not getting called up. Whether or not you believe in favourites, Lawrence is clearly not really a part of Page’s plans and Lawrence for his part had a lean month in Feb which helped keep the pressure off Page. Even then it’s probably fair to say that Lawrence would have to score 7+ in a month to get the media to sit up and take notice and ask a question. I think he’s done unless something extraordinary happens in terms of his form, the management changes or there is an injury crisis to end all injury crises. I feel bad for him in that it seems like he’s done what was humanly possible to do over the winter months, but it just isn’t happening.
