Great move. Hopefully all the Welsh Reading players make the step up.

Hopefully he's been bought to play rather than as a squad member.

Hopefully he's been bought to play rather than as a squad member. Agreed Trendy. Tbh, I believe we're still to see the best of Gunter regularly. Having said that for Wales least, his displays against England twice and Bulgaria away and his second half display against Switzerland down the Liberty [all last year] gave us a indication of what he can give us, defensively and going forward.

As I stated in another post - I fear Gunter will play centre back if Ricketts is injured - its the type of thing Coleman can be relied upon to do isn't it?
For God sake - Collins has been taught a lesson! Please call him up and play him with Gabbidon!! They played together for many years at club level. What is the point in making a point which is going to humiliate our national team. Think of it as Wales using Collins
On Gunter - he has a good attitude but HE CAN NOT DEFEND! I am sorry but until he learns to do so, lets please try the alternatives for Wales. He does not exactly set the world on fire in attack - how many assists has he ever been involved in?
Can Drummett defend? If he can then I'd be tempted to give him a go. We need to prioritise solidity at the back.

He's won 2 penalties. That's more than most people have contributed to this team.

He seems a great lad and has experience but he's a championship level fullback who's had chances to prove his class in the Prem but not taken them. His contribution when he receives the ball is 90% of the time pass it backwards.
Given that we are so blessed at fullback, surely we can find a better solution?
Is Matthews not better? Perhaps Dummett? Or Taylor at right back?

I've been a defender of his on here... but fuck me, he was shit last night. He seems to be going backwards- his early performances when he couldn't even get in Cardiff Citys championship team were so much better than the recent dross we've seen from him. I don'T like scapegoating individual players, and I do think Gunter has the ability to come good again, but he really needs to be taken out of the team now. Matthews did OK at left back, but he should be the first choice right back for the forseeable future, and if he's not fit, Neil Taylor or Ricketts should play.
The main problem is his awful positioning- he ends up BEHIND the right sided centre back a lot of the time, does't know where his winger is.... the opposition overlap and expose him time after time. I want to see him learn a bit more about defending before he's back in the Wales team.

I don't think he played particularly badly last night, but for the killer first goal he once again found himself in a central position. He tried to close down the Serbian player, but didn't succeed in preventing a pass out into the wide spaces created by him coming inside. The consequence was an unpressured cross which led to the goal. Of course the pundits concentrated on Myhill's poor save, and Davies' and Gabbidon's failings, with some justification, but it all started with Gunter's poor decision making.
If it was a one-off it could be forgiven, but it happens match after match. It's as if he really wants to play centre half. It's just not good enough and although he offers something going forward it's not enough to offset his glaring defensive deficiencies. As I've said many times, I hate writing people off, but if he hasn't got a basic positional sense now, I doubt whether he will ever acquire one. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Probably one of the most dedicated players we've had in a while, but recently he's been off. In his first 20 caps he seemed really keen to get forward, help out the winger, and a lot of the times did impress. But like the general Welsh play, he has no confidence in getting forward anymore, and I don't know how many back passes I saw last night, not just from him of course. Mathews and Davies seem much more confident at the moment, and tend to get stuck in and have a go. When both are fit and can play in their positions, I see no reason why Gunter should start.

With the system we play we are getting exposed down both flanks, as overlapping full backs leave a 2 on 1 far too often
He has nearly 50 caps and is only 24, if he carries on playing he could be our record cap holder someday.
For me, Matthews and Taylor would be preferred to him at right back and possibly Dummett in the future, shame he isn't a little taller as he could of possibly played centre half.

no,I'm not being sarcastic...I know it doesnT get said a lot on here! but fair play, tonight he'll become the youngest player (24) to win 50 caps for Wales. That deserves some recognition for commitment and pride.
Also quality (yes, quality!) I imagine there will be some jokes about 50 caps but only 20 forward passes (boom boom) but I remember his performances vs Ireland and Germany in 2007, Norway (2008), Switzerland (2011)and a few others being excellent.
Maybe with the number of young full backs we have (Taylor, Matthews, B Davies, John) centre half will be his main position for Wales in future?

Agreed. It's a good achievement from a very committed player. I'd always advocate having him in the squad, if not the starting eleven.
You are right though, he should be well down the pecking order in terms of full backs so perhaps his best chance of getting to a 100 would be through moving to the centre.
Does anyone know whether he is ever selected / in consideration for CB at Forest?

Totally agree, 50 caps at the age of 24 is some acheivement.
We all know his limitations but he must be doing something right as Toshack, Speed and Coleman have all picked him.
Not sure he will make a centre half but it's up to players like Matthews to oust him

Congratulations to him. That he's beaten Gabbidon and Collins to that total is however a disgraceful reflection on them both

I didn't realise he was that young. Could he be the first ever Welsh player to hit 100 caps?

He certainly could be, although competition for right back is high
Matthews, Taylor and Dummett all realistic possibilities

Well done Chris Gunter.
Who'd have thought a young man from Newport that went to my old shitty school would have achieved something so great!
Hopefully he won't be first to 100, no offence.

Hopefully he won't be first to 100, no offence. Indeed. He'll be a good squad member from now on hopefully - called in at centre back/right back when desperate like tonight.

Congrats to Gunter. 50 caps at 24 is superb achievement and shows his commitment to his country.
Best game for Wales was 2-0 victory against Switzerland.

Germany, Frankfurt in 2007 for me. Only 17 or 18 and stood firm.
Tonight he's pushing that (and the Switzerland) performance close

Tonight he's pushing that (and the Switzerland) performance close considering he's out of position and had to play 35 mins with a league 2 centre back on debut, vs that side in their own back yard... Exceptional. Best game for Wales. Gunter is a really good player. It doesn't get said enough.
