All this does is remind me how incredible it is that Bale retired so abruptly. I don’t really go in for international retirements and international testimonials, but in Bale’s case you surely have some kind of swan song…and yet that’s that. At least Bale retired from all football, not just international like many others do. Of all players I personally would let Bale off if he hadn’t after the impact he’s had. No send off in his case just seems wrong!

Will be sad to see him go and can understand the merits of having experienced old guard players in the squad to set standards but realistically he's just taking up a spot these days.
He really should have played against England. We were essentially down to our third choice rb and 3-0 down but Page still preferred to play Ampadu there rather than Gunter.
If he's working on coaching badges, could it be justified to take him as part of backroom staff rather than a squad member? Not sure what the rules are around that when the player is still contracted at club level.

The fact that he’s contracted to a club shouldn’t be a problem as long as he’s not named as one of the players in the squad.

I kind of like the way he bowed out, very Cantona-esque, had enough, see you later and thanks for everything.

It really is going to be Toshack era MII come the next few years.
Not saying Gunter would have been involved, however all these retirements have a similar feel to post Hughes.
Diolch Gunts, one hell of a journey.

Just woke up to this over here. A bit of grit in my eye after watching the FAW video. The cross for Vokes.

Good footballer, he’d run all day and could defend better than most.

Does anyone get the feeling that for a lot of the 2016 side once they'd stopped playing for Wales they weren't really that fussed about football? So many, what can be considered in today's game, early retirements.

So many, what can be considered in today's game, early retirements. Maybe, the past few years with Wales have been career highlights without question for most of our players, but I think we would need to consider why each individual stopped playing for Wales to get a better picture. Bale's body became worn down, Gunter dropping down the leagues and hasn't been involved in a club win since 28/01/23... Goalies and exceptions like Messi/Christiano Ronaldo aside, what is the age for retirement now? More often than not it's going to be based on injury record, performance levels, need for money or still having ambitions to fulfill rather than reaching a certain age. Gunter's 34 at the end of the season and he'll have played more games Ashley Young, soon to be 38, so certainly has good number of miles on the clock. I don't know what a developmental coach does but Gunter's professionalism and character has always been his best strengths and are important foundations for development.

To the best of my knowledge the development coach teaches up and coming players to pass the ball backwards!

A performance coach should be very experienced and a bit distant from the players surely? Is it a good thing asking someone who played with the squad recently to critique things, which I assume is a part of the role. It smacks of jobs for the boys, albeit I do believe from memory that Gunter has his coaching licenses and comes across as an intelligent guy. I just wish we sought the best, most experienced people for roles

I prefer the FAW link: faw.cymru/news/chris-gunter-appointed-cymru-mu19-head-coach/Interesting to think where the 2016 lot have ended up and which have gone into coaching. If we're being glass half full about things then we can say that Craig Knight, Christ Gunter and Matty Jones seem quite switched on characters. Potentially the most high profile coach now in youth set-up is Wayne Hatswell and ironically the one I know least about.
