First Wimbledon player at the world cup since Robbie Earle and Marcus Gayle in 1998? Think so. Shane Smeltz played for Wimbledon a few seasons before 2010 WC but not aware of anyone else. Wimbledon are my foreign side so looking forward to seeing how he does. Inexperience side cost them last year so his experience will be needed. He didn't seem particularly enthused in his interview, but he's always pretty laid back in interviews and probably bored of the fanfare around signing for a new team.

Potentially then we could be taking two players to a World Cup who may well line up against each other in the fourth division!

Sent off for violent conduct. Wimbledon's appeal against his red card was upheld and the sending off was overturned.

Sent off for violent conduct. Wimbledon's appeal against his red card was upheld and the sending off was overturned. Makes you wonder on these decisions though as it was 2-2 when he got sent off eventually losing 5-2. So no ban for Chris but the decision (now overturned) looks to have had a major bearing on the result.

I really, really hope he decides to join Bale and announces his retirement rather than 'being retired'.

I really, really hope he decides to join Bale and announces his retirement rather than 'being retired'. I love him but at the end of the day he shouldn’t even be called up to the next squad. Not because of the division he’s in or anything like that, we simply have far better options.

Page spoke recently about not wanting those involved in 2016 going all at once due to how much experience they have on international scene and how positively they've contributed to training camp environment.
This has to be balanced against creating space for new leaders to step up and ensuring the training camps are kept at high level.
Croatia away and Turkey away in heat of June are probably games I'd lean on the former, but am sure Gunter recognises that RB/RCB is position we've got greater strength in depth in.

No disrespect to him but he's miles off it. Goes into the world cup on paper as 3rd choice right back. The England game he could have actually come on but Page put Ampadu there instead as opposed to him and doesn't trust him in a game we already lost.
Plenty of options now. If he's getting selected again there's definitely something up.

He wasn't expected to play a second anyway. Just went to the WC as a squad member. But he would have certainly started if we made it in 2018..sigh

I really can't see him getting called up again. Page has talked about freshening the squad up, now is the time. Regan Poole or Gethin Jones are both players who will offer more to us in these next few years than Gunter now

TBO, the whole 2016 remaining members should quit for good... (Joniesta doesn't have to, he is still young, though I cannot see him being picked again unless he can return to at least league one)

Do that and we won't have a goalkeeper to pick. Hope Hennessy will carry on for a year or two even though he's not getting any younger/playing many games, don't trust Ward not to drop at least one clanger in every game he plays.

I'd say Ramsey, Allen and Hennessey still have something to give us. Still a big fan of Jonny too but argue the case for other players. Mainly due to lack of suitable alternatives. But it should be the start of phasing them out

I cant see Gunter ever retiring from int football but its hard to justify his selection going forward, although I wouldnt rule it out.
Atm he’s competing with;
RCB; Ampadu, Lockyer, Mepham, Cabango, R Poole
RWB; Roberts, Neco, Sorba and then there is Hedges, R Poole and Gethin Jones all playing regular football in the ch’ship and league 1 respectively.
Would also think about Fin Stevens.

I really, really hope he decides to join Bale and announces his retirement rather than 'being retired'. I’m not a big fan of anyone announcing their retirement from international football, apart from in a case like Bale where they physically can’t cope with the commitment. It’s a good attitude to be there if your country needs you, iirc Jari Litmanen was high profile example of someone who refused to retire. The onus should be on management to move on to other players and only call that person up if there are no better options.

Bale didn't retire from international football - he retired from football altogether. Gunter doesn't need to retire, he might not get picked going forward, but there might come a time when with some sort of injury crisis we might need him, even if it is "to make up the numbers". It's up to Page and his team to decide if Gunter is needed or not.

At this stage, if he ever plays for us again something will be going wrong for that to happen, injuries, fall outs, Bubonic plague.....

From an interview with recent Wimbledon signing Ali Al-Hamadi
"Gunts has been a massive help for me – I was put in touch with him through Garath McCleary – whatever I’ve needed he’s done his best with it all. He’s a top guy. For someone to have had the career he’s had and still be willing to help the younger players is a real testament."
He's talked about getting his coaching badges in past interviews. Most likely out of the current 'old guard' to transition into coaching?

Hasn't announced anything. Can't see him ever getting called up again unless we're absolutely desperate. There's enough lads able to play Wing back, full back and centre half ahead of him now.

Surely deserving all the same of a fond farewell later this year e.g. against Gibralter in the autumn friendly?

Surely deserving all the same of a fond farewell later this year e.g. against Gibralter in the autumn friendly? Where do you draw the line though? Ashley Williams has been our best defender in the last 20 years but he hasn't been given a farewell. I get the sentiments with Gunter, but I don't think he's anywhere near the same level as Bale in terms of celebrating their Welsh career.

Agreed, think we need to start looking forward rather than back in giving him another cap. An on the pitch half-time presentation with Gareth should suffice. Fans would want Page’s head on a spike were he even named in another squad I think. Regan Poole far more deserving as the back-up utility defender

All this does is remind me how incredible it is that Bale retired so abruptly. I don’t really go in for international retirements and international testimonials, but in Bale’s case you surely have some kind of swan song…and yet that’s that.

At least Bale retired from all football, not just international like many others do.
