Ben Davies in particular must think what a fair decision! Makes a total joke of the honour.

Ben would've been my choice, but nevertheless Gunter's been a fantastic servant this past year.
Congrats Chris.

Yep congrats Chris! Out of interest, by whom is it decided? There's a fan's player of the year which Joe Allen got; a media's player which Dave Edwards got; and a players' player which Bale got. So who decides who gets this?

For those wondering, Ben Woodburn won young player of the year.

Joe Allen and then Ben Davies in that order for the past 12 months of service.

While it does feel like a token gesture, I'm not going to begrudge him it. Chwarae teg Christopher.
It's blatantly super Ben Davies though.

It feels a bit like when Giggs won the PFA (or was it the writer's award?) in a season when he wasn't especially good. More of a recognition of consistent quality over a long time. There's a lot of affection for Gunter, for very understandable reasons, and the award reflects that more than anything. I guess it also reflects the fact that no one player has had an exceptional stand-out season. Allen was our best player over the year in my opinion, with Ben a close second, but I can understand why others might have it the other way around, especially when there are few specific moments that spring to mind in support of either, or anyone else for that matter. Apart from Woodburn of course - but how insulting would it be to give the main award to a 17 year old on the basis of less that a game in total game time for the national team and not much else?
Truth be told it's been a year of mediocrity - in the best possible meaning of the word. That could all change in the next week/month of course...

That's what my thoughts were exactly, along with when Giggs won the British and Welsh sports personality of the year in 2009 - after having an average season. With no disrespect towards Gunter, just feels a bit of a token gesture.

I think the gripe was not that he had under performed but more that the decision was made in March and he had not played the last three or so months of the season.

Davies shades it for me as he's been consistently performing well at a higher club level than Allen while noticeabley improving game by game.
As much as I love Allen and am pleased he got some recognition, after a great first couple of months at Stoke he's been a bit underwhelming since. Always brilliant for Wales, as is Ben, but the latter's club form deserves to win him some kind of accolade.

I understand that reasoning, but for me Allen shades it because of his international form. Ben has been great for us and terrific for Spurs, but Allen has been at the heart of everything for Wales. He makes us tick right now. I would be more worried had he been ruled out of the next two qualifiers than Bale - and that says a lot.

Pleased for him, hes a great servant for Wales...... but, not sure how he got this award - i think Ben Davies has been superb for club and country, certainly should have won this award.

I would agree on Davies, followed by Allen. With Bale gone at least we can rely on Gunter to pull out another world class performance

For me over the last year, since the last Awards last October I would have to have gone for Ashley Williams, he is the glue that holds all of this together and despite his club form coming under scrutiny at times, his ever present nature and leadership skills in the absence of Bale and Ramsey in key games would have won it for me, crazy to think Gary Speed never ever won this award but John Robinson did, football is a game of opinion.

Gunter on his Instagram:
"We will never pretend to be something we are not. We've experienced more than anybody will ever know or feel. It's the end of a campaign, but not the end of us. For every negative comment or opinion shows just how far we have taken this nation. We will be back, and the people that matter know this. To our country, thank you. What we have is unique and special, don't ever forget that. We are welsh and this is our journey. To those that matter, see you soon, diolch yn fawr. You are the best."

Gunter has his limitations and we need to see more of what we saw from him in France don't think he has been as effective in more recent games but he looks more comfortable when there are three centre backs just as Taylor does. You just can't help but like the guy.

Congratulations to Gunter who will captain Wales for the first time against Panama on the night he wins his 85th cap.
Its been a big year for Christopher. Shame he didn't put that chance away against France, we could have all joined him in going ballistic!

He should have his very own personalised SO58 Bucket Had made & presented to him by the fans. You’ll then bump into him wearing it in a bar in Vilnius in about 10 years time.
