Transnistria - use Wiki for the history. Border control was painless and delay (20 mins) was only because 2 buses in front of us, only check for every car was then to ensure no pork was being carried into or out of area................ Foot and Mouth disease is a huge issue. We booked a private trip here and were surprised at the contrast. Has expected a poorer area with poor roads and buildings etc. There were military around with a covered BMP and machine gun position on a bridge but it appeared relaxed. Moldovans seem to worry Russians will all just invade and take over their country. Tirasapol roads are in excellent shape, buildings new or recently painted. Reminded me a bit of some of the Spanish resorts with new buildings etc. There is a 40 hectare (100 acre) sports complex with 6 training pitches, great stadium plus an enclosed football stadium when weather is bad. In truth if FAW or FAI has similar we as football fans would think well done. A Molodvan talking to after game said he often went there to watch football and it was great place to go. New covered market which is cleanest I have ever been in, makes Albert Square market look so 20th Century. Statue of Lenin / Memorial to people killed in Independence war with a Tank on a pedestal are easily accessible. We also visited a supermarket and was cleanest ever been in with plastic coin currency. Stadium / Supermarket / Petrol station owned by Sherrif Organisation who is son of Ex-President and saved up all the money for this, probably from a paperround It is worth a visit if only to say you had been there. Thanks How long does it take to get there from Chisinau?

Driver said 2 hrs but we did in less than that and driver obeyed all speed limits and didn't try and prove himself. Nice little earner for him but him and guide did what was asked of them so no complaints.
Prob useful being careful driver given sheer volume of Police on the road. Belarus delegation were visiting somewhere hence lots of looking after them going on.

Thanks for the great feedback, oscardelta From a quick read of the YBIG Chisinau page, there were a fair few bad incidents as well as small pockets of violence, threatening behaviour from the locals and 3 lads being forcibly harassed and needed to hand over some money to 'escape'. Probably less of an issue if in a group of 3 or 4, but it did sound like lone travelers were specifically targeted. I'd say, if on your own out there, dont be wearing our tops or waving flags, and you'll be grand. Otherwise, the general consensus seems to be good and positive.

Seems like good news from the YBIG web site re: ticket allocation. The Irish were allocated close to 1000 tickets, which is almost 10% of their capacity. There are mixed opinions about how many actually attended as opposed to 'harvested' the 5 euro tickets. A couple of people saying only 600 - what is your estimate oscardelta ? Does anyone know what the actual attendance for that game was? Can't seem to find an actual figure on any of the usual sites.

Hi guys another Irish fans here who was over in Moldova. Another flight option for some of yous that may have a stretched budget is to fly to bacau in Romania and get a bus from there to Chisinau
41 of us did this last week and it was a good laugh, bus we hired was luxury and provided a guide and all. If anyone thinking of going thus route would highly recommend the company and can pass details on if need them

I reckon we had 500 fans in the stadium.
I stayed in Mini Hotel Chisinau a short walk to the stadium. Great hotel, lovely staff very comfortable room. 27 euro per night for a single room incl breakfast and they pay for your taxi from the airport. I'd definitely go back there. They have a small bar which doesn't close.
I can't see how you will have any ticket issues.

How long was the bus journey from Bacau to Chisinau? Any ideas how much it might cost to get a car and driver to do the journey? The bus journey took us around 7 hours but we did stop several times for food/drink and also hour and a half at the border (including a visit to duty free) When we originally started to plan the trip we were looking for an 8 seater bus and the price was €240. If you get the flights early enough will get them extremely cheap we got ours for €26 from Dublin to bacau

Easiest option (and relatively cheap)and not using too many holidays. Those flights give excellent 90-100 minute connection times in Kiev airport. For anyone fancying a stop-over in Kiev, you can use the official UIA website and split the flights by 24/48 hours or more. Works out the same £166/£170 return. Kiev is a great city and I'll happily give you some tips - was there in March ;-)

Good question. Anybody know? We sold 1000 tickets for it and stadium is roughly 10-11,000. Will post more in a day or two when get back. I have suggested that someone from Moldova Tourist Board joins here so they can help with any questions / trips etc. As always Riot Police for an Ireland away game is the most boring job going................. long may that continue I'm not from Moldova Tourist Board, but I'll be happy to assist you in planning your trip to Moldova next year. I'm working in incoming for the last 8 years and have enough knowledge about travel destinations in Moldova, inluding Transnistria. Please feel free to ask any questions.

As Moldova is not in EU (like UK In 2 yrs) then it is possible to buy Duty Free at airport............. be wary elsewhere I would suggest.
I seem to remember 200 fags were €11-12 and Alcohol just as cheap, important for those flying direct to UK.

We have booked this, going to drive down from north wales Saturday, watch the Austria game in Cardiff then get straight off to a Gatwick hotel to fly out Sunday lunch time

Due to this and Georgia away being so close I am actually torn between the two. I can't afford both, but I just can't decide which should I go for. Any suggestions or arguments for or against either? I should be fine for a ticket for both games

I've booked to fly over Luton to Chisinau with Wizz Air on the Monday, getting there around 5am Tuesday. Flying back to Luton on the Friday from Iasi/Romania with Blue Air. Around £140 return I think it was.

Around £140 return I think it was. The same Blue Air still has a decent flight out of Liverpool at 0930 and from Birmingham at 10am to Bucharest for 50 euro! Arrive Bucharest 3pm and take night train sleeper to Chisinau. (my flight) Wizz Air out of Bristol to Warsaw on Sunday at 3pm is still only £40. LOT on Monday at 11am Warsaw to Chisinau is a fixed price £81 - but is cheaper on Opodo/eDreams and you can get cash-back as well on this route.

Lads don't be expecting much with blue air we flew with them over and the lack of leg room made Ryanair look luxury lol

I should be fine for a ticket for both games I would go with Georgia for the following reasons: - Tbilisi is beautiful - The stadium has history - It'll be a more competitive game The main arguments for Moldova as I see them are: - it has a slightly higher 'out there' factor - we are more likely to win Don't get me wrong, I would love to do both, but if I was choosing one, it would be Georgia.

... Just to whet your appetite towards Chisinau ... and knowing full well that Georgian food is much more exciting than the Romanian equivalent ... La Placinte is a Moldovan chain restaurant owned by Sheriff (also running the Andy Pizza chain). They have 12 restaurants around Chisinau. Exchange rate is 30 to the pound ... Here's their photo menu - laplacinte.md/en/pages/menu/ (mama-liga and polenta are the mainstay corn/maize porridge-like staple)

The Best Option I have seen for this one has to be:
Flying Direct with FlyOne using Opodo
Tuesday 5th Sept - Depart: Birmingham (13:20) " - Arrive: Chisinau (18:30) (Warning: This flight gets in 1hr and 15 mins before kick off)
Return Thursday 7th Sept - Depart: Chisinau (11:00) - Arrive: Birmingham (12:25)
Cost: £173

The good news is that the Chisinau airport and their stadium are on the same side of town, only about 6km apart. So a taxi directly there should take 30 minutes or even less... The bad news is the Flyone has a tendency to cancel their entire flights while only giving 6 or 7 weeks notice. As they did with their Saturday flight, a day ahead of their match. Better fly to Bucharest and train from there or to Iasi and then bus it
