Also for anyone who is interested in history and not just the Football and beer here is a fantastic documentary about Moldova and an area within Moldova that is seeking independence and even has it's own currency. Moldova had a civil war in the 90's that we in west europe don't seem to know about www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0I404gXbNg

Blue Air have started selling September 2017 flights to BUCHAREST. They have 50 euro one-way fares from: Liverpool Birmingham Luton
Mostly early Sunday 3 September, but a very decent Monday lunchtime as well ;-) Plenty of cheap bus/train options from Bucharest to Chisinau.

luton flys to iasi on the moldovan border just in romania as well. it is a bit more expensive though at 84 pounds per person, and there is buses and trains which go to chisinau from iasi and from chisinau back to iasi which should be cheap as well. this is also blue air

The Irish had a choice of behind the goal (5 euro) or VIP Grandstand for 20 euro. Looks like Block 39 and 40 are the ones reserved for away support. Tickets have 4 different prices 100 LEI = 4.50euro behind goals. 200 LEI =9 euro main stands. 500 LEI = 22.50euro VIP main stand. 800 LEI =36euro Higher section of main stand. footballtripper.com/zimbru-stadium-chisinau-moldova/

Is anyone staying at the Suisse Hostel? Its a stone's throw away from the Chisinau Hotel (a real Soviet area relic - where most of the Irish are staying) and its smack bang in the heart of town. Its only €5 euro for a bed in a 4-bed room (single beds) - still available for our dates (although they only have 16 beds / 4 rooms in total). Got excellent reviews on Booking.com (unlike Retro Moldova Hostel).

Air moldova is on sale, unfortunately no mon or wed flights but a reasonable £140 return sun - thurs currently Their website is a shambles, and even when imputing the dates and flights from Stansted, I can't seem to manage to find it. You can book it via Opodo for same price (even get CASHBACK from various sites!): Dept Stansted 3/9/2017 at 02:40 pm Arrive CHISINAU (3 hours later) - 07:30 pm. Its £82 one-way, there, without cashback. I think the £140 return quote, above, is for an early morning return leg with Kiev stop-over. Coming back with Moldovan is £164 and the return leg is also a comfortable 12:30 pm dept on Thursday from Chisinau and arrival at 2pm in Stansted. Wizz Air should normally have a Luton flight on Monday Dept 08:35 am Arrive 13:50 pm - but its still not been announced yet. Their February/March prices hover around £78 one-way. NOTE ALSO,Wizz Air should also have a Wednesday return leg flight to Luton for £58 or £78 (but you need to wait...) Dept Chisinau 14:20 Arrive Luton 15:55

And apologies yes the £140 was with a stopover coming back, looking at £160 or so with direct flights both ways.
Holding off for wizzair :-)

Holding off for wizzair :-) Air I can't imagine the Wizz Air flight working out much cheaper than the Moldova Air one. Moldovan give you free meal and free carry on capacity (the Ryan Air / Easy Jet sizes) They also offer both e-Ticket or a free check in at airport Use a Cash Back site to enhance this further like www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/manulike and than click through to Opodo (you should get £7 back in about a month). Unless its much more convenient flying out of Luton at 8am ... I'd recommend buying one-way with Moldovan flying out and perhaps only the return leg with Wizz, back to Luton?

Wizz Air are doing a 20% DISCOUNT across all flights, everywhere, for anyone today only - 5 October... This also include reduction on their £12 standard fee for cabin bag (RyanAir size). Not very convenient date being in Vienna and all... Anyway. Finally booked my best option: Bristol to Warsaw Sunday 3 September at 3.15pm arriving Poland at 6.45pm (£40 one-way). Seeing the spectacular laser show and carrying on Monday 1pm with LOT to Chisinau (£60 one-way after cashback). I understand from oscardelta that return with Lot is not much more! Anyway, from South Wales, unless you want to trek over early morning to London, this is certainly the most convenient I could find!

How many tickets did R.O.I. get? Good question. Anybody know? We sold 1000 tickets for it and stadium is roughly 10-11,000. Will post more in a day or two when get back. I have suggested that someone from Moldova Tourist Board joins here so they can help with any questions / trips etc. As always Riot Police for an Ireland away game is the most boring job going................. long may that continue

Ok proper update rather than one from a wifi connection in Central Europe. Chisinau.................... nice city to visit with a probably olde worldy 70's feel in buildings particularly in centre. Early Sept with good weather then parks and other areas will have lots more stuff open. However as you move towards airport there has been more development of shopping Malls / Casino's etc in the normal Glassy / Plasticy type found in cities everywhere. Stadium is between airport and city centre. Roads pretty grim with lots of potholes. As a pedestrian check both ways and watch out as drunk driving is an issue. Mind you last time in Cardiff was warned of same thing by hotel. Taxi's from airport circa €5-10 max/£5-10 roughly to city centre or more like €5/£10 GBP by next September............. as you enter arrivals area there is a Taxi stand, use them as they official. Currency is Lei and works out 22ish to €1/£1. Hotels seem to be good quality (least one I was in was), and seems most opinions were they were of a decent standard. We paid less than £40 a night. Pubs................ The Dublin (Irish pub)............ small and ran out of beer but food was decent, Beer House..........good was feedback, Duke of York....British pub in centre which never really caught on with Irish fans but did visit and was a cellar bar but was ok. Dublin and Duke both has WIFI. Food and Beer were cheap. Spotted a Spanish Restaurant but didn't visit as well. Taxi's from hotel to anywhere worked out circa 40-50 Lei (circa 22 to 1 pound). Didn't take Buses / Trolley buses but works out 2-3 Lei for a journey in the city..........15p. People were friendly and helpful. Ave wage appears to be €200-250 a month so stuff will be reasonable. There is a McD's in centre city and also close to stadium for those who worry about foreign food. !!!! Walking around centre is relatively painless and there were tours of Wine Caves done, trips to Transnistria plus more than a few who did Hotel-Pub-Hotel trip.

Transnistria - use Wiki for the history. Border control was painless and delay (20 mins) was only because 2 buses in front of us, only check for every car was then to ensure no pork was being carried into or out of area................ Foot and Mouth disease is a huge issue. We booked a private trip here and were surprised at the contrast. Has expected a poorer area with poor roads and buildings etc. There were military around with a covered BMP and machine gun position on a bridge but it appeared relaxed. Moldovans seem to worry Russians will all just invade and take over their country. Tirasapol roads are in excellent shape, buildings new or recently painted. Reminded me a bit of some of the Spanish resorts with new buildings etc. There is a 40 hectare (100 acre) sports complex with 6 training pitches, great stadium plus an enclosed football stadium when weather is bad. In truth if FAW or FAI has similar we as football fans would think well done. A Molodvan talking to after game said he often went there to watch football and it was great place to go. New covered market which is cleanest I have ever been in, makes Albert Square market look so 20th Century. Statue of Lenin / Memorial to people killed in Independence war with a Tank on a pedestal are easily accessible. We also visited a supermarket and was cleanest ever been in with plastic coin currency. Stadium / Supermarket / Petrol station owned by Sherrif Organisation who is son of Ex-President and saved up all the money for this, probably from a paperround It is worth a visit if only to say you had been there.
