Flights and accommodation booked! Can't wait! How many aways required for this one? 4? I used to fear that in a 10k stadium they will only give us 600 tickets. However, there seems to be a bit of a rebellion going on about the increase of ticket prices (€3 to €5) and some footballing politics, so they offered ROI and Serbia 1300 tickets and only got a 6000 attendance to both of those. I even checked the Moldovan website on match day, electronic tickets were still available online at face value (£4) with no delivery needed nor surcharges. I am 99% confident that everyone that wants a ticket will get one for this. Probably around 1500-2000 FAW allocation and the rest electronic tickets online! (if we get 7 points out of ROI, Serbia and Austria - then I imagine us taking 2k to Moldova easily)

There are 4 of us going to Ireland, none are likely to do Moldova although some of us are already booked up for Georgia. I cant see many doing both Moldova and Georgia away with them being little more than a month apart.

Ten days along the Black Sea, then a week in Armenia and two weeks in Georgia ;-) Will give everyone plenty of time to perfect their Russian in preparation for 2018 ;-)

Not sure the finances will stretch to a Moldova trip so close to the Georgia game, but having a look just in case.
The blueair flights from Birmingham to Bucharest are only £98 return, Sunday to Thursday. Overnight train in each direction Bucharest - Chisinau would mean only 2 nights in hotel needed. can't find definitive prices for the trains though.

A quick Google brings up the following:
A two way ticket costs 45 euros in 2nd class and 65 euros in 1st class, plus the sleeper supplement: 3.5 euros for a bed in a 4 beds cabin or 7 euros for a bed in a 2 beds cabin. All international trains, including the one to Chisinau, use Bucharest North station ( called "Gara de Nord" in Romanian).
This info was from 2007 so prices (and exchange rate) will have changed since then

Do a search on YBIG as quite a few Irish did that route. The departure from Bucharest Nord is 7.15pm - no need to prebook and it was 25 to 30 euro (1st/2nd class sleeper). Takes 14 hours, arriving 9am.
I will be doing the reverse journey and I noted down 25 euro/12 hours
EDIT Search on DB German rail shows daily depat at 7.15pm and arriving 9am The return leg back departs Chisinau 16:45 arrives Bucharest 6am

For those of you using Blue Air from Liverpool / Birmingham / Luton to Bucharest - about £35 each way Arrival around 4pm connects nicely to the evening train from Bucharest to Chisinau (7.20pm, Gar du Nord, about 30 euro for a sleeper) arriving Chisinau at 9am. You can PHYSICALLY ADD ON Bucharest to IASI even is starting from Liverpool or Birmingham, as there is a 5.30pm flight from Bucharest to Iasi arriving to Iasi at 6.30pm, for 90 lei (20 euro). For those flying to IASI - it is only about 4 hours away by marshrutka to Chisinau - 25 lei / £5, almost hourly. From Autogara Codreanu near Billa Supermarket. This is one (of many) bus companies www.123iasi.ro/autogara-iasi/#chisinau

The wine tours? Transnistra? Anything else? Will be there for a few days so looking to do more than just drink beer on this trip 😉

Will be there for a few days so looking to do more than just drink beer on this trip 😉 From what I read on ROI YBIG forum, most were a little disappointed with the city, but quite a few said they really enjoyed Transnistra and would have actually liked to stay overnight. Think the easiest way of doing that is using the TRAIN, as there is a simple visa on arrival procedure at the railway station. If you are really making a holiday of it, I'd highly recommend Odessa, especially as a part of a 2 or 3 night Transnistra trip. forum.ybig.ie/moldova-9th-october-2016-travel-acomm_topic52082.html

An option from London Stansted is combining: Sunday 3 Sep 07.50-10.40 Ryan Air to Berlin Schonefeld (SXF) for £40 and then Sunday 3 Sep 11.50-15.00 Wizz Air to Chisinau for £50
Direct Air Moldova back lunchtime on Wednesday is still only £120
(the direct Wizz air from Luton is an over night midnight dept for over £160 one-way...)

Here is someone's experience of the Bucharest to Chisinau overnight train (if the link works!!)
Personally, I'm flying Luton to Bucharest with Blue Air and Air Moldova from Bucharest to Chisinau. Total cost was approx. £180 return for Sunday to Wed.

Anyone staying at the Hotel Chisinau? https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/31zkzp/welcome_to_hotel_chisinau_moldovan_tourism_advert/ I know many of the Irish stayed there. Supposed to be a real Soviet area relic, with plenty of atmosphere. A few people reported that the streets immediately near to it are very dark at night, with some serious pot-holes. They advised taking a taxi even for short 1 mile rides (about a quid or so).

Stayed in cosmos myself and must say it was 100% with the staff been great and didn't mind the Irish partying in lobby late and night lol also compared to hotel chisinau cosmos was like the Ritz In terms of nightlife alot of Irish fans set up camp in the beer house during the day and then went to pink martini,Jack's bar or sky bar at night. For food there is countless stake houses in the area between both hotels and good in both the beer house and Jack's bar was fine

How were the locals? Any no go areas? Did you do either the Transnistra or Wine Cellar trip? Locals were fine although in a lot of the areas mentioned didn't see many of them bar maybe in the later bars. Staff in any of the places I visited where fine some had seemed happy to see us others not so much as if you took the Irish out of the room they would of had a very easy day at work lol In terms of no go areas would try avoid Andy's pizza restaurants as know a few Irish were fleeced of money by locals in it. Also on our 1st night the staff on the door of pink martini tried to charge us for entry even though it's meant to be free. We refused left and came back about 45 minutes later and got in for free. I didn't do either but know people that did and said both where worthwhile doing. The lads who went to transnistra booked their own bus tour for it and said it's a surreal place *also another type is try not break any glasses in bars over there as they charge you for it and it costs more than the drink itself with some places charging roughly €3 for a broken glass
