If he plays in Rome were screwed. Should not make the 23. I wish we had better alternatives, but after Allen and Amps, who do we have as DCM backup? Morrell will go cos he’s done well for us, but let’s not forget he hasn’t proved himself above league 1 yet. Then it’s Smith or Vaulks, and Smith can’t get a game in the championship. So 4th spot currently has to go to Vaulks, who’s playing decent in the championship. I'd take Huws ahead of him. Morrell and Smith are better players.

Thing is, I trust the world of professional football to sort out who are the better players more than I trust you (no offence), and Huws cant get a regular game in League 1, and Vaulks is playing regularly at a higher level than all three.

That's one criteria - the other would be suitability to the style of football we're looking to play. Based on what I've seen of Vaulks (which is admittedly not a lot) he's a good fit for a team looking to play direct football, but poorly suited to a possession game. Smith needs to get some game time before the end of the season, but I'd take him ahead of Vaulks if he's got some decent minutes under his belt by then - based on his suitability to playing a more sophisticated brand of football. I doubt whether Giggs sees it that way mind - and I think Vaulks will be in the squad.

None taken, but as long as Huws stays injury free, time will prove I'm right!

Kieffer Moore did turn things around for us in the qualifiers, but so did Joniesta to a lesser extent, finally Giggs realised what he brings to the game!

I think there has been wayyyy too much judgement on Vaulks’ performance against the Modric-Brozovic-Kovacic Croatian midfield in ridiculous heat in what was his first competitive start.
He seems to have a good injury-free record considering our injury prone squad, and his throws bring a different dimension, as seen at the Cardiff games + our height in attack now. He’s also been Cardiff’s best non-Tomlin player I’d suggest. He’d be my 4th choice behind Morrell, Amps and Allen, but i’d definitely take him.

Yes that's hell of a midfield to be thrown into, but that's what we will face in major tournaments also.

Does that include throw ins.
He will probably make the 23 but for me isnt good enough.
We have Ampadu and Allen to play there and Morrell has looked better for Wales than Vaulks
Do we need a 4th defensive midfielder?

Does that include throw ins. He will probably make the 23 but for me isnt good enough. We have Ampadu and Allen to play there and Morrell has looked better for Wales than Vaulks Do we need a 4th defensive midfielder? I don't know how xA is calculated exactly, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this includes his long throws because they don't directly lead to the chances - it's someone (usually Morrison) heading it down into the 6 yard box that usually creates the actual chance. So unless they're counting Morrison's flick ons as xG, they can't really count Vaulks' throws as xA. As to whether Vaulks should be included in the 23, I think he's in pole position for that last midfield spot for now. He's currently the best player for a team chasing the playoffs, and he offers something different with his long throws (Cardiff have scored 3 or 4 as a result of his throws since he's come into the team). It's clear that most of the people writing him off on here haven't actually watched him play much for Cardiff. He looks comfortable on the ball and his passing has actually been great - always looking forward trying to progress up the pitch (without hoofing it). He got a beautiful assist from long through ball with the outside of his foot a few weeks ago (I think someone posted it earlier in this thread) which shows he has ability. He's also streetwise and adds a bit of grit. He's a proper wind-up merchant on the pitch and he gets under the opposition's skin - something I think we lack. We're often far too nice and polite.

There is a massive difference playing against QpR and international football.
Some are suited others are not.
If Vaulks plays any minutes at the euros I will be amazed as he simply isnt good enough.
But optimistic calling it a promotion push😎 whilst sitting in 11th.

Of course there is, but Joe Morrell and Emyr Huws are playing in League One against the likes of Rochdale and Tranmere yet people are clamouring for them to be in the squad. The Championship is a funny old league. You can go from fighting relegation to pushing for promotion and vice versa from week to week.

Morrell has impressed in a welsh shirt and is a lot younger than Vaulks.
Huws I wouldnt consider due to his injuries, a tidy player but not as good as some on here think.
However if you put injuries aside I would pick Huws above Vaulks.

Got another goal today. Chances of going to the Euros massively increased with the bad news about wee Joe.
Hope he can step up to the plate.

I do wonder whether those giving him stick have actually watched him play this season? Or if they're just going on one poor performance against the world cup finalists away in the searing heat on his 2nd or 3rd cap.(Where it has to be said, he wasn't on his own being below par that day) He's been very good since Neil Harries took over, one of the better players in a top half championship team and would have been fully deserving of a squad place this summer.

Good performance again. Part of a workmanlike midfield not pretty but effective. He doesn't stop. Also some nice touches. His set piece delivery was tidy, one corner Morrison really should have done better with.

Sure he said he was going to get married today on BBC Wales yesterday? If that is indeed the case, the Bluebirds must be real happy he didn't, as he was MOTM for me. Loads of great crosses and through balls from mid-field. A great third option for us, alongside Huws.

Good to hear he's performing well.
But, Cardiff fans - hand on heart, do you think he can do a job in our midfield? It's one thing playing well in a'workmanlike' midfield, but a completely different ask to play in a possession-based team. He was found out against Croatia, do Cardiff fans honestly think he can do a job for us?

I can imagine him working well in certain defensive tactics - say we needed a point against Italy or something. I think he's currently 4th in the running behind Allen, Ampadu & Morrell for the CDM positions. Mind you Huws, Levitt, Smith & Burton could all have good seasons then it would be very close.
