i am just having a guess it might be an attempt to get things back in to a normal sequence i could be wrong but i think the world cup groups were drawn well in advance of the euro finals. Europe also has some difficult decisions to make like where to do Ukraine play their matches and will Russia still be banned. Also the next World Cup is extended to 48 teams so a bigger logistics problem so FIFA may want as much time to sort out so qualifiers will most prob be in a shorter time frame

Half the teams in UEFA wont start USA 26 qualification until Sept 25 and finish it in the November window. The 5 team groups start in March and June but that's partly tied up with the Nations League finals that year. In an ideal world they'd shunt the qualifiers forward and get the play offs into the Nov window.

So what does everyone think of the Brecon Beacons news? I had tears in my eyes at the end of the video. It’s significant. Hopefully soon Wales will be knows as Cymru and only Cymru. I doubt Cardiff City and Swansea City being English teams with Welsh skins would ever change but hopefully this inspires more saving of the language. Jesus, you were all for putting a motorway through the middle of it a couple of days ago. Now its a beacon ( excuse the pun ) of your nationalism. If that means so much to you then fair enough. To me its a fantastic bit of welsh landscape that I've enjoyed for many years. whether in the car or on foot and will continue to do so, no matter what its called. Back to football. I was reading a bit on wiki this morning and was shocked to see that the qualifying draw for the 2026 world cup is this July. Is that right seems awfully early to me ? I was looking principally to see what chance we had of making the top 12 - pot 1. We're currently 15 needing to get above Serbia, Poland and Sweden. Not likely to be enough time / games with it being so early. If we'd snatched the result against USA or hung on against Iran it would probably have made all the difference. I never Said I wanted a motorway. I asked the question and said it’s disgusting we never had one. Shows we were never a priority. Everyone is welcome here and I look forward to discussing things with anyone but honestly the last thing you said the “to me” makes me think your English or haven’t lived in Wales since childhood? If so with all respect I don’t you’d get it. Although I’m making a big assumption there. 15 years ago this name change would never of happened the symbolism of this is huge. This could really start a domino effect.

If ever there has been a more pivotal time in history where this country has to make a stand in preserving it's culture and heritage then that time is now, and I say that knowing full well the struggles and threats to maintain our language and culture through decades of interference from over the borders that has existed for hundreds of years. I'm coming from a place that is someone who has traveled and realised how little is known about our country when visiting different parts of the world, their limited knowledge means they know about is England and London, which is plain wrong and frustrating. However there are significant changes that seem to be happening in the rest of the UK too because there is a new agenda out there in recent times where there are people who want to change the whole history of the world, to suit their own logic and beliefs that completely goes against the structure of normal everyday life that people have endured since the beginning of time. That sounds rather dramatic but that's how I see how the world is evolving, but back on topic I learned recently that the Welsh language is one of the oldest living languages in Europe, way before English came into being, so I congratulate those responsible for changing to it's original name of Bannau Brycheiniog despite the reasoning, and hope this preservation of the language continues. To be brutally honest I am not a fluent speaker myself, which makes me not Welsh for some, but it should be taught in schools from infancy throughout Wales not just certain areas so that children learn and are fluent from an early age, this should be government policy. Went on a bit but I felt the need to say this. Btw in Italy there is a new law being introduced that bans the use of English words in speech in order to preserve the Italian language with heavy fines of up to 100,000 euros if found guilty.

I absolutely 100% agree with everything you say. And you are Welsh it’s not your fault England denied you the opportunity to learn. Second oldest spoken language in Europe are we going to be the generation that sees it die or will we save it? I know what I’d rather. I think the younger generation really care about it. Social media seems to promote our culture and with the success of football our youngsters feel more Welsh/Cymro than the generation 60+ they also grew up in poverty as children of adults who grew up in poverty. They have never seen good times. The young are very left they’ve only ever known a right wing government and they don’t like. They’ve seen a lot of things online From around the world and they know things should be better here. They don’t have Stockholm syndrome. I think we have to teach our own history in school. People leave school and know nothing of Celtic mythology, Taliesin, the original King Arthur, our princes, our inventions and contributions. It’s time for this to change.

Please dont take this the wrong way as i have a wife who comes from Wales. I am all for nations having their own identity such as language culture etc but the italian way seems to be a bit of a nuclear reaction. As much as some people dislike the fact English is an international language and it is still a benefit being taught in your schools even if not as a primary language. Most major jobs around the world require at least a basic knowledge of english. This is why England is in such a crap position to many workers have been under paid and have been reliant on immigrants to make the numbers up

Cymro heb iaeth or whatever it was. God, is that still a thing? Nothing more likely to kill a language than some of its speakers being elitist about it. And no, my Welsh isn't great. Had to choose between Welsh and French at my comp so delighted that my nephews are all fluent. (As were my parents). Work in a multi national and am always ashamed that my colleagues have to speak English to accommodate us London office bods. Language is such an important part of identity and culture and I hope Cymraeg is now shared in a more nurturing spirit. Every new learner is a precious asset.

It's a good and valid point about wages but it's in the UK not just England, so many industries have used cheap labour from the EU etc. and paid way below the national living wage rates, however the sh-t hit the fan when we left and we the Brits put two fingers to zero hour contracts, now their kicking and screaming they cant find people to work for them, I wonder why...

The UK has made so many major mistakes one of my major problems has been how the property market has been handled. We have a population which is far to big for the land which we have. I used to see properties which would have been able to have had refurbishments done to them because the buildings themselves were sound. Only for them to be demolished and land sold to greedy developers and what has happened they have turned the sites into mass student developments which are only used say 8 months of the year. This causes property shortages and inflates the prices meaning, children are having to live longer at home with the parents as most are being priced out of the market.

We know only too well about the property market in Wales, with many places up and down the country having holiday homes where the locals born and bred cannot find suitably priced houses or flats to start their married lives or whatever. I go back to the seventies when a lad I knew was jailed for arson on a holiday home in his village, and he wasn't a Welsh speaker, it's been like that since. The whole UK has a housing problem though and there is no end to it with consecutive governments.

i agree with what you are saying, i would compare what has happened to Wales as the same as what has happened in the South West of Emgland in Cornwall and Devon. im interested to know that you said it was happening in the 70s. How did so many of your properties become 2nd homes to english owners. Was it to do with industries shutting down and owners having to move to find work as i know unemployment was very high in the late 70s / early 80s.

Was it to do with industries shutting down and owners having to move to find work as i know unemployment was very high in the late 70s / early 80s. Where I lived as a boy there was huge influx of people, mainly families, who moved from the North East and North West of England to my area to work in collieries and factories, probably because of closures in their towns etc., but it meant that new friendships were born with their sons and daughters that still last to this day. Then as you correctly say Thatcher in the Eighties decided to close the mines and factories which resulted in making tens of thousands unemployed and the area decimated. However in contrast, the fashion of buying a second home in holiday resorts here became more popular for those from Cheshire and surrounding areas, something to such an extent that locals have been struggling ever since to afford mortgages on the smallest of properties, especially in the trendy little seaside villages and towns. On the plus side some of those with second homes have decided to make a permanent move to these areas with their children going to local Welsh speaking schools, so it's not all bad. PS, I don't see this as us and them, yes I am Welsh but I'm also for the UK as one.

Its strange how areas have changed so much, Nottingham suffered pit closures but not as bad as many other areas. We were fortunate to have the likes of Boots, Players and Raleigh bikes to fall back on and you were sort of looked upon as a bit of an outsider if you didnt know anyone who worked for those 3 companies. Now i feel like an outsider in my own city now, the city centre has become a place driven by students due to mass amount of them living within say 2 square miles. Its not been great for the retailers as everywhere has prices to suit students budgets so margins have been squeezed so lots of of unoccupied shops etc. Other areas have become no go areas due to drugs and firearms and the worst thing about it is the fact there are so many homeless people sleeping in shop doorways overnight and its not just in the town centre.

I share your sentiment about feeling like an outsider in the city I call home. Although not born here moved from North Wales to England when I was a young boy so have lived here close on 60 years. The rest of your post, students, druggies, shop doorway sleepers, a city centre with virtually no decent shops describes Chester to a tee! If as your username suggests you were born in the 60's I think we have seen the best years of Britain.

My opinion has always been that language should never be seen as an either/or, English should have been promoted in Wales without the attempted displacement of Welsh I'm a huge advocate for bilingualism, and my future vision of Wales is a truly bilingual country where everyone can speak English or Welsh, and is free to live their life in either language. I look to places like the Netherlands and Denmark as great examples of countries where English gets you very far, but with a retained native language, which protects local labour markets and culture I'd say 95% of Welsh speakers are very pro-bilingualism and I've never met any that think any form of monolingualism is a good thing that should be promoted

They come from far and wide to study at the numerous world class universities here. Obviously the chance to continue to learn a global language also helps. Personally I like students being based in city centres mixing amongst natives in the area. Otherwise you have student ghettos; areas of cities where the residents are virtually all students, with all the anti-social behaviours concentrated in one area. I don't know what the budgets are like for students in Nottingham, but the disposable income of students in Cardiff appears to have no ends. It seems that they can't make their own cup of coffee or butties nowadays. Having their meals from anything other than deliveroo is unimaginable. They can't walk either. The taxi drivers tell me that their income plummets when the students go home.

I grew up in a very anglicised part of Cardiff, never had any contact with Welsh until I met my partner in uni who is from the heartlands. Have been learning Welsh ever since and my Welsh is okay now So obviously my attitudes towards Welsh have changed due to personal circumstances. However, what's been interesting is that particularly since 2016 my friends have also become significantly more pro-Wales, pro-Welsh (none of them can speak it but they would all agree Welsh should be protected/promoted), and know more about Welsh history. I think this is a combination of the Euros & Brexit, the perfect storm of national pride/confidence at a time where a lot of people my age started to get into politics and quickly become disillusioned with Conservatives I hardly know anyone my age that votes conservatively, and I can't see that changing either as they've come to know the tactics of tabloid press/reactionary politics. The old adage that you become more conservative as you get older might have been generally true for the generation that came after the war when "British" pride was at its height. But I just don't think it will ring true for my generation, we know how much we've been shafted and by who

I personally feel that Brexit was a huge mistake, d a lot of people were misled about what they were voting for. Despite being misled, the people who warned about how much of a disaster it would were ridiculed and called "remoaners", so whilst I have my sympathies the lesson to be learned is to be more open-minded to people who disagree with you I personally think Wales can't thrive economically as part of the union, I believe we need our own central bank to start performing better, but I appreciate some will disagree I'm also very anti-monarchy and again I rarely run into anyone that loves them, and if they do, they are usually English living in Wales. There will never be a referendum on the monarchy in Wales/Scotland because the powers that be know full-well they'd lose. Despite England appearing to love the monarchy on paper, I also think a referendum in England would be closer than people think

The relationship between UK & Europe since the end of 2nd world war as been a bit of a strange one. The UK tried to join the Common Market which then went on to become the EU twice in the 1960s but were blocked by France when DE Gaulle was President finally allowed to join in the 70s. The 1975 referendum was on to sstay in or leave and the remainers won. So in a strange way Brexit could have happened 40 years earlier. The common market principles were great but these started changing as title moved to EU. Problem was that as the EU grew the UK influence became smaller and benefits started to decrease so it gave the view of the UK propping up failing new members where we became amongst the 10 nations who were putting more in than getting out and this figure was only going to increase. i would have preferred for the UK to have stayed within the EU and put up a fight for changes of policy but could not see that happening. You can only carry on with paying out more than getting in for so long. What i would have liked to have seen is to balance the books for the UK to stop paying out foreign overseas aid. im a great believer in looking after your own first. On another matter would really like to see your views on why a central bank for Wales would be a good thing.

What i would have liked to have seen is to balance the books for the UK to stop paying out foreign overseas aid. im a great believer in looking after your own first. On another matter would really like to see your views on why a central bank for Wales would be a good thing. If you preferred to stay in the EU that is not looking after No.1 though is it, and if I remember correctly the Common Market back then was a trade only agreement which the EU altered over the years to benefit them and our governments accepted the changes, except for changing the currency to euros, now the likes of Germany independently made deals with Russia for their gas , how can that be ?

I agree with everything you have said i just didt word it as well. Yes the Common Market was trade only which was great idea in principle because he was a collective bargaining power. What you have said about the gas is right and should have never have been allowed but that was the sort of thing i was trying to get at when on about the switch from what was happening under Common Market. i voted for Brexit and if the vote was to happen today would i vote the same way to right i would.

Before some ones comes on and says it sounds like i am contradicting myself and i agree with you having read my initial post. What i was trying to get at was if the likes of Germany were entitled to do separate trade deals the uk should have been in the same able to do the same.

A brexit voter doubling down on their mistake. Sounds about right Bit out of order, 60sred offers a different perspective to a lot of us in his posts. I think rather than take cheap shots it is good to encourage those from outside Wales to join in the conversation. If every post on here was back slapping Welsh left wing ideology it would soon become incredibly boring and gratuitous.

A brexit voter doubling down on their mistake. Sounds about right Mistake ?? I also voted to leave, and I'd do it again every time, the EU is a dictatorship with only a minority benefitting from it at the expense of other smaller nations within , the UK as a whole survived well enough before they signed up and will do so again. We as the UK have had our whole way of life threatened to the point where we are struggling to be identified as British anymore never mind fookin Welsh !, and it's happening elsewhere too . If you travel to EU countries and talk to the locals you will hear hear how unemployment and poor standard of living is costing them , despite the positive rhetoric coming out of EU leaders telling everyone how wonderful life is. Go to Greece , go to Italy and see hundreds of immigrants risking their lives by crossing dangerous waters every day because they've been told of the 'Promised Land' waiting for them , and yet the EU don't fund the welfare of these people, it's left to the countries they land on to arrange accommodation etc. without financial aid, that is just an example !

Amazed you think there’s some sort of ‘Welsh left wing ideology’ dominating this forum. Just reading this page alone shatters that delusion. Funny how sensitive folk get when British right wing ideology is challenged isn’t it?
