Woke up this morning in a serene mood and then I remembered the horror show. ..... I really agree with everything you put, good write up. Has anyone noticed too since Bale retired the biggest change to our game plan has been long throws? I don't mind long throws but it seems to be all we have now. Are we just completely out of other ideas or working with a good asset we have? I think I know which one it is. Yellow card for quoting such a long post in full. I disagree with your point mind. i) we created a number of chances yesterday, ii) nothing wrong with long throws, iii) scored 4 goals since Bale retired in 3 games and only 50% as long throws.

Apologies for that, I just press reply and start writing. We did create a bit but how many of them were on a plate? a few headers and scrambles, but very few that favour the striker, all of Armenias were on a plate for the striker. I've got no issues with long throws if its a minor part of our game, I think a country of our stature shouldnt really have that as our only shot of getting points. Are you trying to make the point that we aren't only using long throws and saying they've only been reasponsible for 50% of our goals? Whats other teams, around 0.5%?

I agree that main change in our play since Bale's retirement has been increased focus on set-pieces, but I disagree that it needs to be a minor part of our game and disagree that it's our only shot of getting points. The question after Bale was how do we score enough goals to get the points needed for qualification when Bale had scored majority in recent times. We created a number of chances yesterday which could have produced goals on a different day even without the long throws, scored a cracker on the counter attack for the first and scored against Latvia with James cross in open play to Kieffer. We are creating chances in different ways even if long throws have become more prominent, and, regardless, I don't have problem with us being more pragmatic about getting the ball into the opposition net seeing as this was lacking against Iran in our worst performance of recent times. The big question now is how we i) score enough goals to win games and ii) stop conceding so many goals? In the immediate and longer term that will be without big Kieffer up front as well.

As the old chant goes 'What a load of rubbish'. What did they do on that get together in Portugal, play pool, golf and sunbathe? Very poor World Cup, good results, average/poor performances against Croatia and Latvia and then the debacle of last night. They made Armenia look very good at times and every attack they had looked ominous for us. Realistically, how many of this current bunch on this form would get into the 2016 squad, not many I'd wager. Worst defending from us for ages, although in fairness we did create chances which were mostly wasted. Looks like a return to the bad old days unless there's an immediate step change in performances. I know there was a poor patch with Giggs, but I think we had better players then who eventually pulled through. Those millennials who haven't lived through the decades of misery some of us wrinklies have, take note that time may be fast approaching.

I thought Nathan Broadhead looked a little off it when he came on, unfair I know but he gave the ball away needlessly a few times and looked like he was running in mud with the ball.

Japan is the football market to shop in right now and are coming off the back of topping their World Cup group despite facing Spain and Germany. This came on back of 20 years of building on football boom caused by hosting the World Cup with South Korea. Sure the football world has changed since then, that nation states are investing and larger nations getting so much smarter with what to do with their money, but it's still important to recognise that growth over extended period of time matters. We might be going into a dip now but believe that it's a dip rather than a return to bad old days is important for that (hopefully) longer term growth. Giggs didn't have better players. But our recent history tells us it's about having a good team, a good plan and a few magic men rather than decent mean average talent levels with wide range and that's the challenge for this grouping now that Bale has retired.

If we are going back to being awful again thats fine by me. But I cant stand the slow paced, we'll figure you out soon, gaps will appear style of play. If we're going to be awful at least show some passion. The only passion I saw last night was the anthem, we deserve a lot more than what those players are giving us.

We dont seem to have any idea what to do with those players. We may get to the Euros with someone who cant get a match for Fulham scoring the winner, or we may not.

But we do need more from team at the moment.

Second half I agree was much better and should have won it, but even the goal was their defender hacking down Bale who had his back to goal. Welsh football is going through a very bad period, hopefully we can still get the points we need so we can get another tournament out of it, but we need changes that work out and fast or we will continue to plummet.

Want to say that on reflection aside from Rodon I was most disappointed by Ramsey's performance. Last night required a disciplined defence first performance and for him to control the game and he wasn't up to it. Sad to see and I just don't think he's the player he was anymore. Maybe he can be a good option at no.10 but honestly I think Brooks is a better option than him now

I haven't said that either. You're forgetting our best away result in recent year sandwiched in between those two things, it's not been all terrible. Obviously I'm gutted about tonight but the campaign can be turned around People called for Giggs's head after the Hungary/Croatia double header but he turned things around. Monday is huge now, I'm not that confident but all things aside I can pick out 11 players from that squad I believe in. If we get the lineup right we can get this back on track. Not to forget before tonight we were ahead of schedule with 4 points Read the BBC Wales report. It doesn’t make great reading for Page! Saying he got it horribly wrong I mean I think his big mistake was selecting players that haven't been playing. That is on him and is a horrible mistake. Even still I think everyone here was selecting Rodon, Mepham & Moore in their preferred XI before tonight, so I certainly can't berate Page for that lineup which in hindsight was the main mistake If you watch the goals back they are all errors from Rodon & Mepham apart from the last one where Morrell got caught cold. If we can solve those issues and cut out those errors then I think we win that game last night When people say the tactics were wrong what do you specifically mean? Maybe we mean different things by tactics. If you think our players touch was off and we weren't marking our men then that's not tactics that's player performance. If you think Armenia's formation counteracted our formation in a specific way or that they targeted a weak player then it's tactics. In which case what were the tactical issues? Personally I feel it's more player performance and errors that's lost that game

We all have our opinions, Ashley Williams and James Chester were a better partnership than the current duo, and we'll wait a long while to replace Joe Allen. We won't replace Gareth Bale for a generation at least, plus Ramsey was younger then. Nevertheless, thank you for your observation.

Right, here goes.
We actually created more chances yesterday than I’ve seen us create in many games previously. I’m thinking of a few Kieffer headers, a couple of cut backs that were then hit straight at the keeper. Thought we started really positively and had we scored another, the game may have been different. In all honesty, even those glorious years with the 2016 crop, we rarely blue teams away and sometimes struggled to put some of the minnows to bed. BUT- we were always defensively sound. Personally I think we have to go back to being hard to beat and if we win games 1-0 then so be it. For me, get back to a back 3 with wing backs. A box midfield, 2 sitters and 2 10s and a quick willing runner up front. It’s fine margins. I don’t think Page is the right man for job, although I thought his starting XI yesterday was what most would have gone with. To say that was the worst performance, even before Gould, are way off. Yes it was disappointing but games like that happen. Too many individual errors and it cost us.

I can't get over the similarities with the way we were completely open in the middle of the park last night and in the Iran game, we've learned nothing and that worries me greatly. A good to decent manager gets this team to second in the group, we just need to be properly organised. On last night's showing I think a lot of teams will fancy going at us now. Armenia, for all their decent flashes of technical ability, were far from great and I can see how they get tonked by teams and fall to pieces, we should have scored 4 or 5 easily last night but we were so wasteful, clinical sides will absolutely slaughter them.

I think this is a very balanced perspective and agree with you Page is in a difficult spot now, he either continues this new 4-2-3-1 with different personnel and hopes that Armenia went the way it did because of individual errors. Or he hits the panic button and reverts to type with the back 5 and hope we steal a win against the run of play. I think he will do the former, and he probably has to stick with it now given the last 2 camps have geared us up to play this way - it will either save the campaign or be the sword he dies on If someone was looking at it with a fresh set of eyes the 2016 formation you mention might be a good short term way of nicking a result, but I do wonder whether it's too passive in the modern game. Think the World Cup showed that the game has progressed and Iran showed us how a simple 4-4-2 can undo a 5 back formation I think our future is definitely playing more progressive style, our players are good enough to do it, but perhaps Page isn't the one to implement it. Bellamy's stock is rising as Burnley no.2, I know he'd love the job. He'd be my candidate to usher us in to a new era and playing style

Something that I think is important to point out is;
Latvia 2-3 Turkey (last minute winner) Andorra 1-2 Switzerland Moldova 0-0 Czechia Austria 2-1 Estonia Kazakhstan 3-2 Denmark
Gibraltar have played France & Netherlands and only lost both 3-0
The easy games just don't exist anymore. The Nations League has raised the standards across the board. That doesn't take away any of the disappointment, but these results are more common in this day and age. Traditional minnows are better organised and score more regularly. It's just a fact that we can't assume we deserve to win these type of games and need a proper game plan

Petty, sure. Red card? Not for me. It's all irrelevant anyway and we'd have lost with 11 anyway This is a good view of it. Yes, it's no leg breaker, but it's a red card all day long. I’m tamping with this. I was sitting in the Ninian Stand not far off in line with the and I thought it was 6 of 1/2 a dozen of the other, the keeper ‘s body position blocked my view of the back heel flick and I didn’t see it. Their keeper was bang out of order, but I don’t get Moore - what is he playing at? It’s a petulant unnecessary flick that’s put us down a man and gets him a ban. It was completely unnecessary - how does he hope to get away with something like that these days, there’s a ref, 2x linesman, 4th official and VAR. I can see he’d be annoyed but he’s got to get with the program. Deserves the red card for stupidity alone! We need to work on our discipline.

We have seen him get emotional and angry on the touchline and he did it versus Estonia at home with just a few minutes left and wasted our own time as the ref went and spoke to him. Emotion is fine but it needs to be controlled. He seems to be setting bad standards from anger on the touchline, picking players regardless of form or fitness and playing with a mates in the park philosophy. We have had stupid comments like put on our big boy pants. I think we are all fed up now as their does not seem much substance to anything he does or says - he just cannot manage a team effectively / problem solve. Our team is poor but he needs to wake up and realise that that means we need to work hard with controlled aggression and not get angry and blame everyone for our terrible mistakes / poor form. Phone Osian and ask him how you do basics such as plugging holes in midfield during a possession turnover and ensure your central defenders are central in the box when an attacker is there waiting, as well as spreading out the team to take a pass through intelligent movement and hard work so that we don't keep being pressured when playing the ball out from the back - there should always be a player free if they used their heads/worked a bit harder!

If we cannot create chances against such limited opponents as Armenia then we are in serious trouble, so it wasn't down to any improvements in our playing style or change in personnel that chances were made, but we did miss some especially Moore, and even if we had got a second in that early period , I'm not sure it would have changed the outcome, because once Armenia tweaked their formation they took control of the game and should have scored more than four. I'm absolutely convinced we are not getting the best out of the players, Connor Roberts as an example is half the player he was for us two or three years ago, yet he is flying forward for Burnley, questions about the players fitness , commitment and management aplenty.

Ramsey is not a holding player so should be further up the pitch, I'd start with morrell in front of the back 3, we are far better with a back 5 as was seen last night our back 4 struggled, especially the centre halves, we gave them too much time and space.
Changes to personnel and formation should be made, I'd go with this.
Hennessy
Mepham Rodon Davies Roberts Williams Morrell
Ramsey Wilson James Johnson

Look they were much better than us and played very well but the point is how much did we help them look like Brazil on the counter last night as they did not seem to have to do a great deal to reach our penalty area and get a clear sight of goal. As a reminder they are supposedly 60+ places behind us in the rankings and Page NO WE DID NOT NEED THAT SLAP IN THE FACE - IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDABLE WITH DECENT PREPARATION, A GOOD GAMEPLAN AND ADEQUATE MENTALITY They are also a smaller country than us with just 3 million people I believe they lost 7 of their last 9 matches (no wins) before they smashed us 8 June 2022 Nations League Scotland 2 - 0 Armenia 11 June 2022 Nations League Ukraine 3 - 0 Armenia 14 June 2022 Nations League Armenia 1 - 4 Scotland24 September 2022 Nations League Armenia 0 - 5 Ukraine27 September 2022 Nations League Republic of Ireland 3–2 Armenia Dublin, Ireland 16 November 2022 Friendly Kosovo 2–2 Armenia Pristina, Kosovo 19 November 2022 Friendly Albania 2–0 Armenia Tirana, Albania 2023 25 March 2023 UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying Armenia 1–2 Turkey Yerevan, Armenia 28 March 2023 Friendly Armenia 2–2 Cyprus Yerevan, Armenia They had this result last year too: 29 March 2022 Norway 9–0 Armeniaoh and North Macedonia beat them 0-5 away from home in 2021 too in a WC qualifier Oh and we know about that one talented player they have but look at the old ages of many of their players and who they play for? The only obvious massive edge they had over us was their coach. They looked like they were a league or two above us and far fitter and faster. The players and especially Page are a complete disgrace. Hennessy Mepham Rodon Davies Roberts Williams Morrell Ramsey Wilson James Johnson I would not go for Rodon he hardly plays and has gone backwards at an alarming rate. He needs a year in championship to regain some confidence. For me cabango needs to come in as he is at least playing games. Imo Morrell is to small for international football so try ollie cooper. I would not play neco either as he is nowhere near match fit. Maybe an opportunity to try Morgan fox.

Scotland came from 1-0 down with 3 mins to go to win 2-1 away to Norway
Can we have some of their spirit please!
Dykes had 1 chance and scores and assists. QPR FFS. Look at our bunch of prima donna Premiership players and what they have delivered. Is it them, Page or both?

I am actually glad for them as they keep fighting, have had a hard decade or so and actually show how you should go about things when you have a squad of relatively limited players. They also have a capable (not great) manager who knows what he is doing

Whilst it still feels crap, let's be clear that if we were as clinical as they were we wouldn't have lost that game.
We missed at least three or four clear cut chances that we should have buried.
Forwards almost as culpable as the defenders IMO.

Is the Canton stand what it was? Yesterday it was mainly coaked up middle aged men slating every player on the field. Yes we all know it was a poor preference but isn't that when they need us most. Everyone on social media slated the family stand in the last game for there light show but at least they were all behind the team cheating and enjoying there matchday experience.
