IF YOU NEED AN E-SIM
UPDATE - it is genuine - just connected onto its UK data plan and its using O2 in the UK
Obviously, buying cheap local sim card (similar price, but with 8gb data and 100 minutes) will allow you to use all the taxi apps and call hotels etc.

Ha! I’m on that flight too👍 12:15pm Aegean out of Gatwick for Athens ? Well, I’m on the 23:45 from Athens with Aegean… lands at 04:25 in Yerevan. Probably going to book a GG taxi into town, welcome to tag along if your hotel is close to Republic Square.

Supposedly being met in arrivals by the driver. I’ll be the one in a red shirt and bucket hat in the bar at Athens airport :-) If we’re on time and the driver is there, you are welcome to jump in.

Where can I get Armenian Dram? In armenia, I've been told that armenia dram is a closed currency, you can't get it here. I've got a revolut account, I am going to use my card to get cash and use it to pay for my hotel as they only charge 1% for each transaction. If you have an Internet bank account use that.

Get revolut or you might still have enough time to open a current account with somebody like Chase, Monzo or Starling bank. All fee free for purchases abroad. My plan is to withdraw cash from the airport once I land as there's usually ATMs in arrivals

Probably going to book a GG taxi into town, welcome to tag along if your hotel is close to Republic Square. As I have a 5 hour wait at Athens for the flight to Yerevan, I was looking at heading off to Artemedia, on the coast, around 15 mins by cab, rather than pay airport prices, for grub and beers. Received an email yesterday from Aegean, offering me to bid for upgrade to business class on the flight to Yerevan. I stuck in a cheeky bid for the minimum allowed @ £55. Got confirmation today that it’s been accepted. The Aegean business class lounge at Athens airport is now calling my name. All singing and dancing, free grub and beer. I don’t think that the actual flight upgrade is all that great. Seat upfront, nobody sitting next to you, fancier food menu, extra leg room and priority boarding. May be worth considering for anyone else flying with Aegean to Yerevan with a transfer at Athens of more than a couple of hours.

Overnight, there were more demonstrations - centred around Freedom square. Largely peaceful.
Please walk away, if you see public gatherings around Republic and Freedom squares.
The Armenian people are wonderfully peaceful and genuinely decent folk. Sadly, there are outsiders and foreign elements that would like nothing more than a headline in the BBC about local violence. Please don't be part of that headline. :+(

Just arrived. Taxi drivers at airport v aggressive. Quoted 20,000 zonks initially. That’s £40 plus. Called one guy the mafia - not wise at 2am when you’re outnumbered by them - but got one for 12,000 zonks.
Old guy, possibly from hell. 12 minute drive at around 70mph most of the way including one frankly crazy overtake on the opposite side of a six lane carriageway which irritated the guy who was overtaken so much he gave pursuit and overtook slowing down my guy for a frank exchange of views at about 40 mph. Lots of beeping but no gunshots thankfully.
Anyone here 22 years ago will notice most of the potholes have been filled in but all the taxis still have shattered windscreens that look like crazy paving.
Ripped off but Spose I should be glad to be alive.
I’ve missed the Wild East.

Thanks for the heads up on the taxis. Now taken up the offer from the hotel at 8000. Just about where ever you seem to go these days airport taxis seem to be a license to extort money. Was in Casablanca earlier this year, the taxi rank outside the railway station resembled something you expect to see at a stockcar race and some of the driving was way beyond reckless.

What was the situation in terms of getting local currency at the airport?

I get in at a sociable hour but am going to avoid taxis reading the above. I’ve had a couple of bad experiences before and it’s so unnecessary.

UPDATE FROM THE FIELD
just arrived. Converse bank (before passports) and Unibank (on your right, just after exiting customs) give great rates. The money changers near baggage reclaim give very poor rate.
BUS NUMBER 100 is now 24/7. Costs 300d in cash only. Every 30 minutes until 2200 and then every full hour until 0700 It's straight in front of you on the second lane (cross over one lane) - just to the left of the COFFEE KIOSK

Marshrutka number 201 must be the only marshrutka in the Caucuses that ... leaves on time and not when full...
I do love this country!

I didn't see bus sign. Got flustered by taxi drivers as was expecting a decent price. I was pestered straight out of exit.
Good rate of exchange at airport - I got 482 to the £. In town today rate seems to be about 490.

I used the ATM of Unibank and my ßtarling app is quoting me (preliminary) rate of 488.6 I saw Converse bank at airport quoting 485 for cash - but I was 5th in line for passports, so didn't want to end up last! The lady at unibank was happy to break my 20k notes, for the bus :+)

Just to clarify... for @agentb 100 is full size bus and despite the poster showing credit cards ... it only accepts 300d in cash only - it only goes as far as French Sqaure - about 700m south-west of Republic sq. Number 201 is a marshrutka with 12-13 seats, with precious little space for baggage - and it goes along the route of the 100. Skirts around Republic sq and terminates at Yeritasardakan Metro - about 1km NE of town. He will be happy to stop ANYWHERE along the route, not only at bus stops...

We are getting into Yerevan at around 4am, I've downloaded the GG app but won't have any Internet access unless I can get a sim at the airport.
