For the record I'm not Page out. I understand the financials and will never call for a manager's head without serious consideration of all information I do attribute tonight's poor performance mostly to the players, and felt the team on the pitch was capable of a lot more. They showed that against Croatia. There's no reason the same players couldn't play with that same intensity and desire in a must win game Now here's where I do criticise Page. You can't pick the same team and the same formation in every game unless you're one of the top teams imo. Pep can do it. Klopp can do it. And few others can. We're Wales, we have to be clever, we have to adapt, and we have to play the best team available to beat the team in front of us. Tonight we didn't get that. Tonight we got the best available team to beat Croatia Croatia have their style, slow passing working their way up the pitch in a 4-3-3. Perfect for us to play a back 3 with mobile 10s to soak it up and hit them on the break. That's what we did and it worked a treat. So Page picks the same lineup for momentum's sake. I understand this logic, a lot of fans called for it, but here's the issue... Armenia also play 5-4-1/3-4-3. They're not Croatia. They won't dominate the game, they won't leave 6 players up the pitch. When we play 3-4-3 we're going man for man against them. We know this about them because we played against them already. Page should have recognised this, and recognised that our formation matches up evenly against theirs. There's no advantage to be gained there like Croatia. Maybe the plan was match up and do it better than them? It failed if so In hindsight I think we should have gone 4-2-3-1 aggressive against them. A tactician would have spotted that this would stop their back 3 playing and would have given us more control over the game. Page was spooked by the fact we played that formation and lost to them in the summer. When in reality the addition of JJ would have changed things greatly. Being more proactive would have helped. Page, despite stating we wanted to get them back for the summer, was actually scared of what they could do, which played into their hands Ultimately it's hard to suggest alternative lineups when the subs were so poor. However I do think this is contextual to a degree. I don't feel playing something like Ward Roberts-Mepham-Rodon-Davies JJ-Ampadu Brennan-Wilson-James Moore Would be a recipe for disaster. That lineup should be able to cope with Armenia much better than tonight, on paper. That being said, I think and have thought for a while that Roberts was/is poor. He was so wasteful and lacking composure tonight. Huggins in for him to see how he responds imo, too comfortable in his position knowing he will always get picked. Let's introduce a bit of jeopardy to performances and see the impact This is a good post but just about every time we've tried to play a back 4 we've looked terrible. And not just under Page, it goes back through Coleman and Speed too. All our managers try it, and all revert or settle on wing backs.

Players win games not tactics. Page not at fault imo.

I always prefer to sleep on a result or performance before giving a final analysis.
Having done so, my conclusion is that it was an unmitigated disaster.

Page is like every coach you ever had at under 10 ages. Pick the 11 best players on paper and pass it to the fastest player you have. No tactical awareness, no idea what to change, no progression, no idea. He was a league one player and is a league one manager. ( nothing wrong with that, but he shouldn’t be near Wales )

To me, the following seem true
1. We want to play 3 at the back. 2. We want to play 2 holding midfielders. 3. We want Daniel James to start.(Probably out wide). 4. We probably want Kieffer to start. 5. We probably want 2 of Ramsey, Brooks and Wilson to start.
Conclusion - Dan James at wing back instead of Connor.
Whither Brennan? Not sure.

He had a couple of seasons either end of his career playing in the third tier but also played 36 times in the premier league. He was no world-beater but he was not, by any reasonable measure, a league one player.

I feel that's us in general. From Page speaking, to the players it's like the personality is vacuumed from the room. It's very overly professional, don't say anything you shouldn't, monotone, all the time in the world and just boring. Bale was a larger than life character and was always dragging controversy with Madrid or was the centre of attention. Now its just soulless. "Bale was a larger than life character" - no he wasn't! 😂😂 He was the most media trained player I've ever seen. Late in his career he OCCASIONALLY steered off script when he felt comfortable doing so as captain, but for the most part he stuck to scripted answers in his interviews To state otherwise is a-historical pish in my opinion. That's nothing to do with the the actual problem and we shouldn't be distracting from the actual issues with this nonsense I didn't mean in interviews. He had an undeniable presence, did things how he wanted, had no problem standing up for himself. Was harassed by Spanish media and gave it back, used it all to fuel his passion to perform for Wales. Same with Ashley Williams, he had a presence, a real leader. The most we get now is people raising their hands in frustration.

Re: Brennan Johnson - His form for has been mediocre in most of his appearances for us. I realise his club form has been very good for sometime, hence his transfer to Spurs. Doesn't deserve a starting place for us at the moment, even if he's a top half premier league player. To me, it looks like he's just going through the motions when he wears our colours. Wonder why?

The painful truth though is that we've been outclassed in both games and have been lucky to get a point let alone 6. The way they patiently build attacks with sharp 5 yard passes would have been a joy to behold had it come from us. We looked like a lower league outfit today and we were frankly embarrassing. In the first game we outscored them on xG and tonight we both scored 1-1 on xG. So on the balance of play we should have 4 points from these. Yes they "looked more dangerous" than us in both games. But the stats say otherwise. Not excusing two poor performances, just stating how saying we've been outclassed on both occasions is a bit imbalanced. In reality they've scored 5 goals against us from very low xG chances - very unlikely! Fair enough, saying we were outclassed overstated things, but Armenia played the better football in both games, and had more controlled possession in the attacking third. The fact our goal came from an own goal from a long throw says a lot. They deserved to win both games. With regard to your later post, you make your points very well. However, I don't agree that we matched Armenia yesterday. Yes, in terms of formation, but not in terms of how it was implemented. They pushed their wing backs forwards to pin our wing backs and pushed their front three a good 10 to 20 meters further forwards than ours. We had great difficulty in getting controlled possession beyond our defensive third as a result. Had we matched their approach I'm confident the outcome would have been different. Had we started with James, Wilson and Moore and pushed our wing backs onto theirs I think their defence would have struggled, as that was where their team was weakest. We didn't need to risk a big change in formation or personnel, a modest change would have been sufficient. As it was we didn't press Armenia at any stage, which had me tearing my hair out it was so obvious that the game was crying out for it. To lose without seriously laying a glove is unacceptable, and poor as the players played, a fair bit of that failing was on Page.

We do we struggle so much to get the ball forward from the back and other teams seem to do it easily against us?
I hear lots of comments stating a high press leaves gaps but it seems to suffocate us, while even lowly ranked teams seem to easily get the ball beyond the half way line with little pressure on many occasions against us. I know which approach seems more useful to me! Not pressing just seems lazy. Also surely if playing out from the back there should be potential to have overlaps? Are our players working hard enough to move into spaces to accept the ball under less pressure?

Obviously all the focus here is on our failings but worth pointing out just how good a player Zelarayan is. I suspect that if he hadn't played, we'd have won both games. Wish he was Welsh and not Argentinian - sorry, I mean Armenian.

"I'm not going to fault the players for their effort. Their effort, to a man, was commendable. They gave everything, like they always do."
This is easy to say, but I didn't see that at all. James and Johnson were especially disappointing given they were fresh. There was no intensity in their pressing. Clearly Page's instructions were deficient.

We didn't play the conditions very well. Given how poor the pitch was there was even more reason to press high. Forcing hurried passes on a bobbly pitch is even more likely to result in turnovers.

That's down to coaches and how we set up though, it's not like this group of players is incapable of playing a back 4 I'm pretty sure we played with a back 4 reasonably successfully under Speed? Gunter and Taylor played as traditional full backs with Williams and Blake at centre back? Coleman and Roberts are the ones that brought in the back 5 as I recall Giggs also played a back 4 and our best performance under Page (the Turkey win imo) came with a back 4 Formations, particularly in modern football, don't need to be so static either. Teams play a host of different shapes throughout the game these days, but we're completely static in our shape. I think we are coming to natural end with Page, he's been in manager for 3 years and around the system for 6 years. Sometimes you just need to freshen it up, it doesn't mean it's a failure, just that different ideas and voices are sometimes needed. Our performances have largely become stale, I think a lot of the players have become comfortable in their positions, they need to be shaken up

Maybe playing 2 fast wingers with no number 10 is the problem. If they're out wide and a knackered and battered Moore is dropping into the hole to try to link that ball is only getting played backwards. For me it always comes back to a back 5 and 2 defensive midfielders. Ampadu and James don't seem the type to receive the ball and run through the midfield successfully.

There was a moment in the second half when I thought Kieffer was through but it looked like he was running in treacle, he got outmuscled by the number 3 and the ball would have broke out to Broadhead but Broadhead fell over.
Kieffer running slowly Kieffer being outmuscled Broadhead falling over
At this point my head was in my hands and I had a feeling that it just wasn't going to be our day. I don't think we travel particularly well under Page, we just seem to lack something.

Also worth mentioning that the Armenians were at it again with the fouling and play acting. Refs need to get smarter with this and we possibly a little more physical in the right areas. The number 3 that Kieffer should have sent flying shouldn't have even been on the pitch by then after his cynical ankle tap on Wilson. Absolutely no attempt to play the ball, he knew he wasn't going to get it and went for Wilson's ankle. Ethan steamed in and got a booking for his troubles but refs need to be stronger, it was worse than Morrell's red, it stopped us breaking away in their half and it could have resulted in serious injury for Wilson and it was as deliberate as they come.

Watched the game back hard as that was. Superficially the two teams had similar formations, but in reality there were crucial differences.
We played with a 5-2-3 out of possession. This left loads of space for their wingbacks to receive the ball, often around the halfway line, from the centre backs when building out from the back. The wingbacks then had plenty of time and space to choose from multiple options to progress the ball. They almost always played ball to feet, and often built attacks from this solid formation.
Armenia played with a 3-4-3 out of possession. The more advanced positions of the wingbacks meant they could easily engage our wingbacks. Roberts especially found forward pass options nullified more often than not, Neco less so. Apart from the wingbacks, the other Armenian players were excellent at closing down, and did so higher up the pitch than we did. This went some way to explaining why we struggled so much to even get out of our own half. The contrast in approaches between the two sides was marked, in spite of quite a simple difference in the starting positions of the wingbacks.
Because of our difficulties in building attacks through the thirds we resorted to a lot of long balls up to Moore, mainly on our right. To be fair he won a lot of his challenges, but Brooks was often nowhere near him. Whether this was down to his lack of fitness, or because he was drawn deeper because of the rest of the team's difficulties in getting out of our half is unclear. So, why persist with this? Why not shift Moore over to the left, to team up with Wilson, who was hardly involved at all? The one time we got him involved first half we nearly scored.
At no stage prior to Broadhead coming on was there a change in approach from Page. It was clear from early on that Armenia were very effective in disrupting our flow, yet at no stage did we attempt to do to them what they were doing to us. The wingbacks never pushed on, and we never made it difficult for the Armenians to exit their half. There is no defending this. Page doesn't have the nous to understand what is unfolding in front of his eyes and act accordingly. I have no faith in him.

"8 defensive players against a side ranked 95th in the world, in a game we needed to win. Two Bournemouth players who don't play the focal point of our limited attack. He stuck with what bailed him out last time even though it was a completely different game."
Very succinctly put. It's almost as if he was so traumatised by the home game that he over-compensated, and went ultra defensive.
One thing we haven't seen since Coleman and Roberts were in charge is how they held one wingback back whilst the one on the opposite side went forward, with the 3 centre backs shuffling across to give a back 4. This gives added insurance, and enabled Gunter and Taylor to have more freedom to attack.
Page's use of our wingbacks is far short of what it could be.

Completely agree, although I have to say the majority of fans were calling for the same XI because of momentum. However, I think you always have to pick the best team to beat what's in front of you. Armenia playing the same formation as us should have caused Page to question what the best way of beating them is. Maybe he thought we could do similar things to them but do it better? A fair way of looking at it, but he should have responded when it wasn't working and had a plan B ready to go

Watched some of the game back......I don't like to pick on certain players, but I question again why Page always plays Moore for the entirety of games. He looked quite gassed after 70 mins, which was summarised with that chase against the Armenia captain that he was bossed out of.
I like and rate Moore, but I just don't understand why he stays on the pitch for whole matches - even when he's performing poorly.

I like and rate Moore, but I just don't understand why he stays on the pitch for whole matches - even when he's performing poorly. I think it's probably because we don't have a like for like replacement

He won a hell of a lot of ball. It's not his fault there were no Welsh players near him most of the time. But he did tire for sure, so there has to be a question mark over him starting.
