Taken three penalties this season (including tonight) and missed them all! So he had some neck wanting to take the one tonight so I can see why they are pissed off! He’s got an awful penalty record for Wales too hasn’t he? Weak penalty against Panama is all I can remember. Penalty wasn't that bad last night, but Cardiff's Smithies is one of the best in the league at saving penalties I don't think I've ever seen a player take such a kicking on a forum before though, its pretty much 15 straight pages of abuse!

Its mad how much some of our players have declined post Euro16. He was prem regular then, now he can't find any kind of form in a decent 2nd tier team.

Still not too late into the season imo for Sam to turn things around if he puts his mind to it.
Wouldn't be surprised, for example, if he plays a surprise cameo role for Stoke in the upcoming League Cup QF (Dec23) against Spurs.
He must be desperate to put in a good shift generally, club-wise, in early/mid 2021 to have any chance of being considered by us for the Euros (in which surely he is keen to participate?)

Reading the Stoke forum they call Sam Vokes "The Wardrobe"! Ha, he's better with a quick strike partner, not sure what Stoke play, if he's been up top on his own? Vokes & Ings isa perfect example! To be fair Ings would make life a lot easier for most strike partners. Vokes & Jephcott would be worth having a look at in a friendly or Vokes & Bradshaw/Watkins maybe!

Just joined Wycombe Wanderers in League One. Would probably have played in some Wales under 21 games with Joe Jacobson who is still at Wycombe.

Slightly hard done by recently?
He's around the same age as Kieffer Moore, both have around 100 senior goals (including for Wales) and a lot of Vokes' appearances have been in the Premier League.
Moore is rightly first choice now but surely Vokes is the second best Target Man we have, so isn't it daft leaving him entirely out of squads? If Moore is suspended/injured/tired then why not have Vokes ready to come on?
Seems silly to me

Seems silly to me I personally don't think our management setup are particularly sold on having a traditional number 9 and feel forced to include Moore due to his obvious impact on us, otherwise they'd call up a backup

I wouldn't mind seeing him back purely based on the lack of options, but he was just ineffective for us in about 80% of the games he played in whereas Moore has been good more often than not. Even when Vokes was banging in 15-20 games in the championship, he would always struggle with us irrespective of the quality of the opposition.

This, which begs the question, why would he suddenly be any different now? We've got some huge games coming up, Vokes is seriously on the wind down career-wise, it's over for him as far as Wales is concerned.

To be fair if you were going to select any Wycombe player it would be Joe J for his dead ball delivery.
He looked a real prospect for the under 21's but never got a full cap.
Can't properly recall, did he get a bad injury at some point?

I don’t think he was a particularly good target man either despite his physical attributes. He’s got an awful first touch for example. As you say he has this really remarkable knack of being poor for Wales even when on form at club level. The only way you can possibly exploit a “talent” like that is not to select him!

Can't properly recall, did he get a bad injury at some point? I don’t know about an injury but he was with Bristol Rovers, below the championship, for a good few years, then we got rid of him thinking we could do better and he then came back up the leagues and surprised many Rovers fans by proving himself to be a decent league 1 level player with career longevity. There was nothing in that to warrant a full cap though. He’s like Billy Bodin, another former Rovers player whose long term level is league 1/2 but just not good enough to warrant a call up (although Bodin did have a long term injury which curtailed his brief championship level career).

Sam's the Man!
Memories of Lille with that goal last night.
They seem to love him at Wycombe!
We could do worse than draft him back in as back-up, if Kieffer or Brennan were to get injured.
