Totally agree. Not arsed playing for us or in general by the looks of it.

No hard feelings towards him personally, at his age it would be better for him to focus on prolonging his club career. Looking through his Wales history, doesn't seem like he was given much of a chance to begin with. Granted injuries and being behind better players hasn't helped, maybe it was an attitude problem but who knows.
Being born in Newcastle with maybe a limited connection to Wales I can see why his heart might not really be in it and sometimes you've just got to say fair enough.

Yeah it's pretty obvious that he never really felt a proper connection with Wales. He possibly was slightly hard-done by not being selected on a couple of occasions, although history shows the right decisions were made (I think the 1-0 win against Belgium at home was when everyone expected him to be given a shot because of the injuries we had at the time, but Jazz came in and Gunter shifted centrally, and it worked out quite well!). After that point, he pulled out of a couple of squads when he had a good opportunity to start, before retiring. Giggs persuaded him to give it another shot, but then he retired again. So as others have said, he just wasn't arsed

I’ve got some sympathy for Dummett. I think he threw his toys out of the pram when James Lawrence was selected ahead of him at CB. In fairness a lot of people would quit their jobs in a similar situation - e.g you work in a supermarket for 10 years. You’re in line for a well earned promotion and some random newbie, clearly not up to job sneaks in ahead of you.

Before anyone gets carried away by saying that Dummett has retired because he was overlooked for Lawrence, needs to be remembered that Lawrence was only selected over him on one single occasion since Dummett made his debut in 2014. Once in 5 years. In the last 5 years, Dummett has been kept out of the starting line up by the likes of Williams, Chester and Davies, more recently by Mepham. He has constantly withdrawn from squads and has ‘made himself unavailable’ without even pretending to have an injury (credit for that I suppose) and has consistently let us down, even in times where he was likely to start (like now for example) There are at least two occasions, maybe three, where he missed the June qualifiers because he wanted a break for the summer.Actual qualifiers, not friendlies. Every single squad seems to prompt a ‘what’s happening with Dummett’ conversation. Yes, if Lawrence hadn’t been selected ahead of him in that one game he might still be with us, but let’s be honest, the same would have happened in he next game or the next if he didn’t get his way. I don’t rate Lawrence, but let’s keep him out of this and not use him to deflect from the fact that Dummett isn’t interested in playing for us, has never really been interested and we don’t need his attitude around the squad. I’m just going to bump my post from 4 years ago, only because I’m too lazy to do any typing.

Actually, have just spotted this quote of Dummett's from a Tyneside newspaper last summer (2022)...
"I was travelling round all over the world for Wales and not playing, picking up a couple of niggles. We had Neil Taylor and Ben Davies, so I was third choice left back in a back five at the time, and I wasn't going to get an opportunity to play, so eventually I just thought I'd concentrate on playing for Newcastle... maybe looking back, I could have had more caps over the years. Neil Taylor stopped going and they changed formation so I could have had more caps, I think, but I made that decision not to go back and I stick by that."
Seems pretty final, so perhaps not worth Rob Page contacting him after all!
Still, he did play a stormer against the light blues of Manchester last night.

Put it this way, he's never thrown his toys out the pram at being bench fodder for Newcastle, travelling up and down the country to not play for them. It's not that he wants regular games, and will push for a move to ensure that. So what's the difference? He clearly identifies as a Geordie and didn't feel that connection to Wales
He doesn't want to pick up injuries actually playing games for Wales (potentially at tournaments) so that he can stay fit enough to sit on the bench for his home town. Says it all about his priorities

I liked it when posters used to use his alternative name!
