I understand Bale isn't in the running....... So I'm thinking someone Page knows or who has played with - Bellamy, Ashley, Earnshaw (friend mentioned he is a good coach apparently. Any of those players would be a good shout! I remember years ago when it was jobs for the boys and they brought in hartson and saunders who were useless but players the team can relate too is definitely a good shout. Ash would be my preferred choice - i'd be worried bellamy may upset the team mentality.

Yeah I'm not too sure about Bellamy given what I've heard. On one side I think he'd be a great asset in the form of putting fire in players' bellies, and of course from an attacking point of view as that's an area we struggle, but then again, his personality traits could be a serious issue.

Craig Bellamy would definitely carry a greater risk given his temperament, but he's currently assistant manager at arguably one of the best coached sides in the world, so his impact potential is also much higher than the others.

Osian needs to come in and sort the defence out, get us defending properly again.
I loved Eric Young as a kid!

The "insider" story in The Athletic suggests Viera came close to sacking in February and one of the clubs issues was concerns regarding his coaching team.
One other article (source lost) suggests issues included players out of position and training ground dispute between two senior players seeing both dropped for one game before both returning the next. Apparently picking Schlupp over Will Hughes was another cause for concern!!
Appears that Osian etc. are being made scapegoats by the club.
Vincent Kompany has made the point that Palace were overachieving with points being picked up against opposition in top 6 places largely without Zaha.

Palace were in desperate need of transitioning from being Zaha and the other guys to a more functional and balanced side, this was the season in which they consolidated and then pushed on next season. There's no plan in place at Palace for the future it seems, when Hodgson left it was an absolute mess and they did invest some money in the team in Vieira's first season but Palace don't recruit like Brighton and these things take time. I think they're very much back to square one now and while they might stay up the same problems will occur next season and beyond.

Maybe he and Vieira weren't right for the job, I don't even rate Hodgson but it seems that all Palace needed was to be allowed to play with a bit of freedom.

Hodgson plays the most boring football yet somehow has conjured up two wins scoring seven goals, albeit against weak defences, so you have to question Viera's tactics, far too many coaches concentrate on not conceding goals, mentioning no names cough! Page cough !! cough !!

To be fair since start of Feb Viera's Palace had played Man City, Arsenal, Brentford, Brighton (X2), Liverpool, Man U and Villa. They were pretty competitive in all apart from Arsenal.
Hodgson kicks of with Leicester and Leeds. Next up Southampton.
I don't think they'd have gone down. Fixated with Hodgson. Going to have to trust in someone else at some point! Maybe Roy will train up a youngster like Benitez or Allardyce for the job

We'll never know whether Viera had planned to unleash Palace in this latter part of the season or, after achieving survival in horribly scheduled season, next year.
Hodgson in very different position where there is no downside for him really.
If I had to guess I would say that Viera raised Palace's ceiling of what is possible, helped get them through toughest part of the schedule but was probably too reluctant to let loose. I don't think Hodgson's Palace a couple of years ago would have created as many chances or scored as many goals as they have over past two games.

I live Osian and he would be my choice but I love how the headline that he ‘would have brought Arteta and Henry with him’ becomes ‘Man City wouldn’t release Arteta and Henry would not commit in advance bit said to maybe call him if Osian got the job’ haha.

Osian needs to ask himself why the FAW did not choose him, it's not about who he could possibly bring in with him.

Osian needs to ask himself why the FAW did not choose him, it's not about who he could possibly bring in with him. I think the reason they didn't choose him was because the whole interview process was a sham. The FAW had already made up their minds to give the job to Giggs before holding a single interview. Both Osian and Bellamy had better credentials than Giggs.

the FAW 100% made the right decision - we saw players retire and giggs brought through the next gen at the time.
We then qualified for 2 tournaments back to back raising he profile of our team even further than we did qualifying for france. Those are the facts.

There's no guarantee that Roberts or Bellamy wouldn't have achieved the same, both are very highly regarded and we were dangerously close to not qualifying for Euro 2020 at one point. I doubt either would have kept the exact same players around, especially Bellamy, the team had clearly reached the end of the road and needed freshening up The FAW also wouldn't have ended up paying out vast sums to someone on gardening leave had they gone for Roberts or Bellamy Giggs was successful, but we'll never know if it was "100% the right decision" because we don't know how either of those would have gotten on

Its a business at the end of the day. no youre right they equally could have been a complete failure.

Giggs rushed players out too soon, he should’ve been more loyal and appreciated the class and experience of some of the lads - especially in defence.
We were embarrassed by Denmark, with an inexperienced 4/5 of Ward, Connor, Mepham, Rodon & Neco coming on at 40 mins.
Hennessey Gunter Chester Williams Davies
That back 4 and keeper would never have let us be thumped 4-0.
The transition was made too quickly, with Giggs not appreciating our senior players, he got the balance wrong. That fucked us up moving forward, and now Page can’t get things going, he needs to look at the entire pool of players available and change things up like he said he would after the WC- but he won’t.

Neco wasn’t ready, he was out of his depth, but it was a good experience for him. Rodon was decent tbf That’s looking at it individually Collectively Hennessey Gunter Chester Williams Davies Had 100s of caps, years of experience together, and knew the game. Giggs did some things well but the transition overall was badly handled

Each of those three players were regressing pretty rapidly, getting less and less game time in the Championship and their form was very patchy at club level. The only one to continue to get an odd game here or there was Gunter, and in the first meaningful game he played after that point (Belarus away) he was absolutely abysmal and nearly cost us the three points. Rodon was one of the best cbs in the championship and, up until the euros, his performances for Wales had been really good.

I kind of get what you are saying as i would have liked to have kept chester for example but the others weren't up to scratch. Remember it was only a few months ago people were calling for bale to be dropped in place of johnson.

Back to Osian's current plans... I take it that he has not gone with Patrick Vieira to Strasbourg ? So, is he just biding his time over the summer to see what Cymru do in September against South Korea and Latvia? I know that the Korea fixture is just a friendly, but another home defeat will hardly bode well ahead of the important trip to Riga...

Giggs did some things well but the transition overall was badly handled Gunter was at that point not as good as Roberts and didn't offer the threat Williams did. He was in League 1 at this point. Ashley Williams had retired altogether from professional football a year before this match took a place Chester was probably hard done by toward the end of his Wales career but he was somewhat unreliable at that point with injuries, he didn't play the final few games of 20/21 and missed the first 8 games of the 21/22 I know you really rate some of the old guard, and I agree with you regarding some of them being hard done by, but that back 4 in 2021 is ridiculous, one of them was 36 and already retired!
