I know its soaking out there but he just sort of fluffed what looked like a straightforward save. It’s certainly not great considering the guy is getting a rare first team opportunity. After being fairly solid with the goalkeeping options for a while the form of both keepers is starting to make it look like a problem position. Ward doesn’t seem a long term quality option…is Hennessey now starting to decline with age?

Alan McKnight once said that goalkeeping is 70% confidence and 30% ability. If you aren't playing regularly you aren't staying sharp and more likely to make errors and if you make errors your confidence is going to be affected. Wayne has spent too long being a sub keeper, it's over. Worryingly, until recently, Ward has spent too long being a sub keeper. Goalkeeper has become a massive concern for us.

Wayne was decent for a while whilst not playing regularly. Hopefully it’s a temporary blip coming off the back of his World Cup nightmare. Ward however just had too many mistakes to his name to give me any confidence that there is a decent keeper in there somewhere. He should have been full of confidence in the World Cup yet I still can’t get over how he wasn’t even set when Rashford hit that free kick. Scandalous goal to give away.

Despite the fluffed save, he’s now made 3 or 4 decent saves. Not all’s bad. From the BBC website incase no-one believes me:
'It's a great opportunity for the Brazilian who forces an excellent save from Wayne Hennessey as he sticks up an arm to keep it out.'
'Yet again Wayne Hennessey makes a great save to keep the score at 2-0.'
'Yet again Wayne Hennessey, only playing because on-loan goalkeeper Dean Henderson can't play against his parent club, does superbly.'

Good recovery at least, however he clearly won’t have much chance of keeping his place. Would be nice to see him playing regularly somewhere if he’s not going to retire from international football yet.

Reasonable chance they go down. No way does Henderson stay in that case. In that circumstance, it's probably him v Horvath as starter next season. As much as I feel Horvath has played well for us in his loan spell here, I would still back Wayne to beat him out.

Seems it is more likely that Ward will relegate instead LoL

Well it seems Wayne’s stock is at a bit of a low. Great show of confidence by Cooper not to pick him tonight for the EFL cup after the hammering against Blackpool (although he did pick some other first teamers so Hennessey not alone in that respect). Henderson makes some crucial saves and then wins the penalty shootout and all the talk afterwards is how gutted everyone connected with Forest are because they drew Man United in the semi final and Henderson won’t be available.
Massive two games for him coming up now

He will likely play 6 games only this season, 4 against MU LOL

Ah, but you never know... e.g. injury/illness/suspension for Henderson etc... a substitute appearance in the EFL Cup Final to deal with the penalty shoot-out... plus scope for a few more Premier League games towards end of season if Forest have steered clear of relegation zone... PLUS qualifiers for us against Croatia, Latvia, Armenia and Turkey. Could be a busy few months ahead for our Wayne!

BBC football website today (Jan 19): "Dean Henderson: Nottingham Forest goalkeeper out for up to five weeks".
Time for Wayne to shine!

Ere…that article suggests they’re looking at the transfer market. They obviously aren’t sold on Hennessey.
Needs a massive game in Forest’s next match

Agree that he needs to do well against Bournemouth tomorrow.
Pity, all the same, that Steve Cooper couldn't come up with something more positive such as ".. fortunately, we have an experienced, international class back-up keeper who can step in".

Actually, apologies to Cooper... I have just read this quote from him:
Wales international Hennessey will start against the Cherries, and Cooper stated: "Wayne is probably the most experienced player in the squad, so he is not somebody that we have to worry about in terms of preparation".
"He is such a professional lad as well. He prepares for every game like he is going to start, just in case he is called upon. He will play on Saturday, and we really back him to do well for us. It’s been business as usual in terms of preparation."

Couple of decent saves tonight, but poor overall as he could have done better on all three goals. The last one I feel is a real weakness in his game. Shot came in quite powerfully across the floor from inside the box, but it wasn't that far away from him. Instead of using his feet like De Gea always does, he flops down and doesn't get there in time.

Wayne would do well to pre-empt a move to the championship this window. That’s if he cares about first team football, rather suspect he doesn’t given that he was happy to be a number 2 in the World Cup season

Drives me absolutely nuts when I see keepers opt to go with their hands when it's easier and quicker to get to the ball with your feet. I feel like this is a very British thing. I played in goal when I was very young and coaches would always say "hands" when a kid is hitting the ball at you from 8 yards away across the floor through a few legs, really daft, the aim is to keep the ball out.

A good save from the one on one, at fault for all three goals though in some way though. Geriatric stuff for the first and third and the second the parry, although a good save, is exactly where you don't parry it. If this was Ward he'd have been set on fire by Wales fans on the internet by now. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vedy-CCKs1A

Have to say that IMO our Wayne is just as good as his touted replacement in Dean Henderson's absence - the ageing Keylor Navas (not the 'keeper he once was)... remember Spain 6-1 Costa Rica in the World Cup?
Hope for Cymru's sake that it's Wayne who stays between the sticks for Forest over the next few weeks.

Yep, seems to be an instinctive thing for him, probably drilled into him by coaches. He also doesn't dive across the goal, with his legs moving in the opposite direction so he just flops directly downwards

After last night performance imo its time for Cooper to recall Horvath from Luton. Hennessey is showing the faults of a keeper who has not played regular football.. With Henderson only being on loan and Horvath still having a year left on his contract now is the time to bring him back as he has been playing regular football and Forest to make him no 1 for next season.

I don't recall big Nev using his feet much and not many modern day keepers are anywhere his level, Hennessey is a big lad who could use his body better than he does by spreading himself, and he probably isn't agile enough to react well with his feet like some prefer to do now, definitely could have reacted better with the first and third, a bit unlucky with the second as the power meant he couldn't redirect the save.

The first goal, if he comes forward two yards he makes it a lot harder to score and easier for him to save. The third goal, the kid picked last in the playground and put in goal boots that away, not something I think any keeper should do but just get something behind it, it doesn't matter what, just save it. On the subject of Nev, he was an absolute class act and from an era where people were pretty much strictly against keepers using their feet for anything other than goal and drop kicks. Feet and legs are used by the best now all the time, the aim is to keep the ball out no matter what, training has changed, minds have been opened, the game has changed.
