Played well tonight. That right back / centre mid hybrid role really suits him. If we had a more innovative manager, we could probably test it out in the Gibraltar friendly, so that we'd have Connor as right back and Neco in front of him out of possession, but Connor moving in field and Neco staying wide in possession. It could make us more solid against Croatia with two full backs down that flank out of possession, an extra man in midfield in possession, and it would give Neco a tonne of space. Obviously won't happen though This is the way the game is going and most teams will be doing it soon enough. It just creates so many overloads. Pep is already adapting it too to incorporate Ederson into the defensive line. A really good video about it below As you've said we've got the players to be able to do this, just not the coaching set up. I've always also thought Ampadu would be the perfect hybrid between a CB/CDM and we could employ an interesting tactic around him stepping up/stepping back. Again though we've not had the coach to do it www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRhBrioRels&ab_channel=TifoIRLYes, and let's not forget that Neco looked quite good that one time Page used him more centrally in that France friendly, so he can perform the role, and Davies has had very good cameos in that role this season. So it suits all our main full back options.

I'm starting to get quite concerned by the impact that playing for Vincent Kompany's total football record breakers (6 home defeats on the bounce) might have on Connor as the months go on. I don't think I can ever remember a side making so many stupid errors at the back that lead to goals. Generally when a team makes a few errors like this they tighten up, keep it simple and/or go into their shell. In credit to Burnley they haven't done the latter but if I was a Burnley player I'd be suggesting that they keep it very simple at the back, kicking it out for a throw in or going long is better than pretending to be something you're not and conceding a goal. One point is better than no points. It's just very dumb but dressed up as being progressive and intelligent football because it's Vincent Kompany in charge of them.

Burnley should stick to their guns. Only 2 points from safety. I reckon it's only a matter of time before things turn for them. I saw the match against Forest and they were very unlucky not to win, and were very impressive. Possession football almost always wins out in the long run.

If anything i think if they became more pragmatic it would do them even worse. Playing the way they are they will put themselves in a better chance of beating the teams around them, if they switch over those teams have been playing that brand for years. Its similar to Swansea, when they became more pragmatic they stopped being able to beat the teams below/around them.

I really fail to see the logic in these kinds of comments. You see it all the time when a team comes up that has a progressive style of play and fail to get results. It's a regressive way of thinking. In what sense do you think that Burnley would get better results playing direct football when they've been geared up over the last season and a half to play this way? There are numerous examples of teams coming up with a good brand of football and being able to kick on - Swansea, Southampton, Bournemouth, Brighton, and so on. Sheffield United are struggling just as much this season, should they start playing tiki taka? It's just the old-school way of thinking in the UK - it's a way for pundits and former players who played / loved football in a different time and see the game through a different lens, to vent their frustrations at how the game's developed. "I don't think I can ever remember a side making so many stupid errors at the back that lead to goals... if I was a Burnley player I'd be suggesting that they keep it very simple at the back, kicking it out for a throw in or going long is better than pretending to be something you're not" I'm sorry, but that's nonsense. It would undermine their whole approach. Surely you will have seen how any decent side these days needs to be able to play it out from the back? You really think that the answer for Burnley is to start lumping it long when their whole game plan is based on a progressive style of play? Why would they start doing that when even the likes of Luton, Everton and Forest are much better at that particular way of playing? The answer for them is to trust in the process and get better at it, not to change their whole philosophy.

I think you are massively knee jerking here to suit a narrative, not just massively, insanely. I didn't say that Burnley should forget everything that they're doing and just hoof it, I said they need to get smarter and know when to and when not to try and play football too much, they haven't got the players to do it at this level yet.
They've just lost a relegation six pointer and followed it up with a record breaking sixth straight home defeat, they have 4 points from eleven games, they've lost 9 games out of eleven, nine. That suggests to me that what they're doing isn't working and that they're not doing a Swansea or whoever you or anyone else wants to compare them to. If they were playing the same way with Tony Mowbray in charge people would be calling for his head.
You've got to read what people say and think why they might have that view, take ten seconds, breathe, we can have decent discussions and debates on here without you shooting people down all the time. Ten second rule, Iot, it will do wonders for you.

Ten second rule, Iot, it will do wonders for you. To be fair, if you look at Swansea last season, for games when they had over 60% possession their form was marginally better than relegation form. When Martin went to 4 at the back and became a bit more direct, with possession dropping to just under 60%, they finished the season with 7 wins and two draws. So, there are tweaks available to possession oriented teams that can improve results without necessarily compromising the ethos. I'm sure Kompany will be mindful of this.

Unused sub today as he watched the Lancashire Toetrippers continue to break records. 11 defeats in 13 games for Vinny's Total Footballers and the record breaking run of home defeats continues, 7 (seven). I don't think being part of this is particularly helping Connor, who looks gunshy whenever he plays for us now, maybe a loan move to a decent Championship side is what he needs.

Connor not in squad today. If doesn’t start against Finland then who? Niall Huggins has been starting fairly regularly for Sunderland and can play on either the left or the right. Top half Championship club. Personally I would start him, but if we're being honest with ourselves I think Page starts Roberts every day of the week rather than throwing a capless player in at the deep end

Just seen a post that he's going to Leeds on loan, not sure how reliable. Decent move. Almost halfway there to a full Welsh-Leeds side now! Even seen rumours of them making moves for Brooks and Moore!

I think his stint at Burnley has proven that he's a top half Championship player but not Premier League player in my opinion. Great last season is a very good Burnley side but struggled in the Prem and now lost his place. A loan move would be good for our playoff prospects

A loan move would be good for our playoff prospects Yeah it's a weird one as I still think he could cut it as 10th-17th place Prem side full back, there have been plenty worse than him that have played 300+ Premier League games at full back. I think he'd probably do alright for Farke and I think Leeds fans would take to him from the off. He definitely needs a loan move and I'll say it again, I don't think the way Kompany sets up Burnley is good for your average defender, you're asked and expected to play a way that most top level defenders would struggle with given the personnel elsewhere on the field.
