Can you name the full backs with 300+ premier league appearances that are worse than Roberts please? Yeah 300+ is probably a bit much, 200+ there's a lot though. I can start with Tony Hibbert, Alan Hutton, Phil Bardsley, Francis Benali (harsh but probably true), Danny Higginbotham..... Hmmmm, some of those players were decent for their era. Roberts is unfortunate in that the Premier League is now the richest in the world and can attract the best in every position.

It's why we shouldn't look down our nose at Championship players, it's as strong a league as many European top flights

Nothing to do with the Connor Roberts discussion, but I remember being surprised how fast Alan Hutton was when he played against us. Didn’t look that pacey when I watched him on TV i just hated him, im sure we had some beef with him... Played in a good spurs side at the time though. Playing a poor scotland side he was probably one of their better players.

Decent move, no obligation to buy as far as I understand but if they go up no doubt he'll stay there.

Should be a good move for Connor.
It’s gonna be so weird seeing Roberts Rodon James Ampadu and Piroe line up down the swancom later this month.

Would have loved them even more if they had managed to sign Mepham and Neco as well. Ampadu must have some fantastic powers of persuasion, as he's just about convinced Farke to go and sign anybody who is Welsh

He was poor going forward last night & didn’t provide much cover at the back either. He & James were very disappointing.
DJ I’m prepared to accept has only just come back from injury after being in good form beforehand, but Roberts’s decline has been long & drawn out.
It’s time for Wes Burns to start.

i was never really a fan, but he was a very effective player, the season we got to the play off final under cooper he was a major part of what we achieved.. it was a difficult watch that year all round, but one game i remember was the forest home game, they were bottom half we were fighting for 2nd place at time. we spent the whole game defending as if we were playing a top premier league team to the extent that with a few mins to go i was very grateful at the prospect of gaining a nil nil. then conor runs the length of the pitch and launches himself onto a cross and scores a magnificent diving header, 1 nil win in a game we didnt really deserve a draw from.. thats the type of thing he did..
very cynical player back then, him and ayew together.. we drove the brentford fans to disctraction that year, i remember thinking "we are making them feel like stoke made us feel when we were in the prem!!!"....

He may not be a Premier League footballer but still a top Championship player. I don't think what level he plays at really has a bearing on it, he is just not very good. That's clearly nonsense when he's been in the Championship team of the season on two occasions in the last few years (so almost by definition the best player in his position in the league). But I agree that he's been poor for us for a while and usually gets found out against better opposition, like he did against Chelsea. He wasn't terrible, no horrendous mistake or anything, but just a very mediocre performance from him and James.

I think it's very unlikely he'll be dropped for the playoffs, but I'd quite like to see us give Beck/Burns some proper run outs in the Nations League
There is also Dasilva of course who could allow Neco to play on the right

He looked poor against Chelsea. Wes Burns starts against Finland. Would be a mistake given he's hardly played there in two years and had a horrendous display at LWB against the Dutch (obviously they're much better opposition, but he was VERY bad in that game). The only way we go without Connor in my view is if we switch to a back 4 with Neco at RB and Davies at LB. Neco's getting lots of minutes in that position now and looks very competent, with the defensive part of his game having progressed massively. It would also allow us to bring another forward in so it's very tempting, but would also be a big risk to change from the system that's been by far the most effective for us in recent years.

Credit where it's due, thought he had his best game for a while. Not too much of the Gunteresque negativity and looked bright going forward. Some sound defensive interventions especially in the first half including 2 confident headers back to Ward which broke up Finnish attacks. Another one probably benefitting from feeling valued at club level and having reasonable game time.

My biggest worry for Poland is Roberts. I just think he’s gone backwards as a player. He looks like a nervous defender and hardly crosses the 1/2 line as a Wingback. Roberts and Mephem have to produce their best game ever for us to get through Tuesday. If we do qualify I’d like to see Burns given a go their. It’s one of our weakest positions and if RND was fit I’d play him LWB & Neco RWB.

I think Burns offers a lot more than Connor going forward but haven't seen enough of Ipswich to be able comment on his defensive contributions.
