That's an unbelievable signing for Doncaster. He's Championship quality surely.

I find it a bit bizarre really. I'd have Smith or Morrell at Swansea in a flash, and the former joins a League One club and the latter joins one of the Championship's poorer clubs - presumably for a pittance. I can only think its sizeism in practice. A great opportunity being squandered by savvier clubs. I think it's called Welshism. I think its called NotgoodenoughfortheChampionshipism

Starts tonight. Looks like game time won’t be an issue.

He’s playing well and is also very confident. Great to see.

Obviously playing against an extremely weak side, but he seems to have his mojo back! Basically back to the level he was the season before last. I'd feel comfortable with him starting our next games if needed

Are you watching, Mr Xhaka?
If I were Swiss, I'd be very worried ;-)

Seen Matty 2 or 3 times recently - and he is really looking sharp, on top of his game and - most importantly - having fun. In the first half tonight, he was practically the main ball magnet - everything seems to go through him and he is certainly head and shoulders above his grade in the league.
I didn't realise he had COVID (on NYE no less) - so all the more impressive comeback from him!
iFollow gave him MOTM ;-)

He may well have moved back in front of Morrell in the pecking order

He may well have moved back in front of Morrell in the pecking order Yep, Morrell down to 4th choice now if we keep Ampadu in midfield. There's no doubt in my mind that Allen comes straight back in.

Always thought he was a good player when he had game time under his belt. Probably a bit better than Morrell on the ball, but doesn't quite have as much bite. Glad to hear he is performing - maybe next season a Championship loan is realistic? Or a permanent move?

Still has two more years on his contract at City www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47713111#:~:text=Wales%20midfielder%20Matt%20Smith%20has,until%20the%20summer%20of%202023. I don't think he'll cut the grade at City. Another loan spell with Championship club next season (Ideally Doncaster again if they're able to get promoted this season), they'll cash in on him end of next season I think if he shows promise.

Great performance from Matt against a quality Mexico team. Seems to have improved again since the autumn games.

Yes, shows what playing regular football does to you. Looked sharp and comfortable. Thought Morrell was the better player but not so sure now.

Matt Smith looks far better than Morrell Morrell have done well for us but come on - he is limited and is physically small at 5ft 7in. I know Joe Allen is small but we would all agree he is a couple of levels above Morrell technically.

Far better? People have short memories. Morrell has done exceptionally well for us. He was excellent in the Euro qualifiers against Croatia, Azerbaijan and Hungary. Then followed up with great performances in the NL. Has never put a foot wrong. It just shows what playing regular football does. When Morrell was a regular at Lincoln he looked much better than Smith who wasn't playing much at the time, and now it seems there could be a role reversal. However the real test is how Smith, if he starts, plays against the Czechs.

Smith probably has more of an all-round game, but Morrell perhaps is a lit bit more tigerish, and perhaps has a better short game. I think he complements Ampadu better than Smith, which I guess is why Page/Giggs favour him. Personally I'd be happy to see either on Tuesday night.

Drop Ampadu back in defence?

It is academic as Smith played the whole 90 last night so is highly unlikely to play Tuesday.

And not sure about calling him 'limited'.

I think the regular football is definitely a factor. When Morrell was playing regularly in League 1 at Lincoln, and Matt Smith wasn't playing for QPR in the Championship he had the edge. They've completely swapped this season with Smith playing regularly in League 1 for Donny, and Morrell hardly featuring for Luton.
I think age is also a big factor as well. Smith is 21, and Morrell's 24. In terms of development, Smith is likely to be improving at a greater rate at his age and long-term is likely to feature more for us.
It's close at the moment, and Morrell's done well for us, but I'd start Smith against Czechia.

I'd start Smith, but bring Morrell on for the final 30 or whenever Smith starts to tire

Why haven't we seen more of Smith? From his performances for us, he's probably equally as good as Morrell, and the only player out of himself, Morrell and Levitt to have actually had a good season of football. Yet we bring on Levitt? Very strange.
