He should play at Celtic for a season or two and learn his position. ---------- And he will. he's highly thought of up there (as a full back) Played another 90 mins in their win tonight (as did Ledley)

Should stay at Celtic for the season, then move to the Prem in my view.
Had a decent game against Norway, positionally suspect but made one outstanding tackle.

He's getting regular football with Celtic, yeah he should go the Premier League but not until the end of the season and lets be honest it would be very uncertain whether he would get regular football with either Everton or Fulham if he went in January.

He should stay and make it hard for Lennon to drop him. Needs regular football to keep improving. The European football will really test him.

Premier league clubs like Fulham & Everton aren't going to fork out 3 odd mil for a player that'll be warming the bench. Everton haven't paid money for a player for years! If a mid-table premier league club offers that for him, I hope he ends up going, because he will play regularly.

Arsenal? Maybe... he looks a more confident player than Carl Jenkinson, and less injury prone than Keiron Gibbs.

Arsenal? Maybe... he looks a more confident player than Carl Jenkinson, and less injury prone than Keiron Gibbs. He's also played a lot more football and experienced european too. I'd say that the defence is probably the easier of the positions to be a starter at Arsenal, as they're weaker defending than going forward (In my opinion). He can play on the left and right which will benefit his cause.

Superb article! I still can not believe Dave Jones was naive and cynical enough to tear in to Matthews like that last year, but Matthews has had the last laugh. Was brilliant against Rangers on Wednesday in the Old Firm match!

No doubt DJ will say that it was his bollocking that toughened Matthews up, or something like that.
I read somewhere that Lennon doesn't want to sell Matthews in the January transfer window despite the rumours.

He caught the eye because his positioning was all over the place but his pace got him out of trouble. He got caught out of position in the Norway game too. At a higher level he won't always be so lucky.
Going forward though he looks the part.
He needs to move to a club with a good coach to rub off the rough edges. He's special

Agreed, Llanerch. The problem is that playing for Celtic, his mistakes won't get punished anything like they would at international level.

Whilst i generally agree, Matthews was very good vs Rennes in the Europa league. And that's gotta be good for his development.

I cant believe Dave Jones would slate one of his own players like that to the press. What a tit.

I think Matthews would probably quite fancy winning something at Celtic before moving. If they win the double this season and Matthews helps them do it, maybe he'll have his pick of top EPL clubs in the summer?

I'd prefer Arsenal. I don't think it's a good idea for Matthews to stay at Celtic for too long (and I don't think he will) as it's not going to test him and quite clearly, they will not be competitive in Europe under the current regime.

Interesting to read on there that he's 'mastering the long throws' - this is good for us as I think it's a waste to have Bale taking them...he needs to be in a position to receive the ball at all times, or at the very least be occupying a marker (or three).

He was taking long throws for Cardiff when he first broke into the team. They weren't in the same league as Delap, but still very effective.

I think one thing we are missing a good quality defensive central midfielder. Could Adam Matthews be the long term solution? My only reluctance is that perhaps you would prefer him to be a bit more aggressive? However, he is a defender who has good technical ability on the ball and so presumably be able to cultivate a good combination with Ramsey, Allen and Bale? We have a relatively high number of full backs available, albeit it is a tragedy that Taylor is a long term injury casuality. Hopefully Gunter can improve.
Think this team should work well on paper
Hennesey
Gunter - Williams - Collins - Ricketts (Taylor to return longer term)
Bellamy - Matthews - Allen - Bale
Ramsey
Another (hopefully we find a centre forward!)
Think Ramsey was destined for a forward midfield role until he got injured, but Wenger is playing him in a more defensive role, which does not suit him as he is not a great tackler and explains in part why he is so ineffective of late. Maybe Bale can swap with Ramsey as necessary and when this happens Matthews can move out wide?
Ledley and Collison (if he recovers from his injury problems) could provide good cover to central midfield. Joniesta can presumably move into an attacking midfield role when the likes of Ramsey are injured?
I know Collins keeps letting us down but surely he can't continue to consistently be a disaster for us? On paper he should be a superior central defender to Blake, who could not even hold down a position in the Championship with Cardiff? A team like us (who will be under a lot of pressure through many games) needs someone who can command in the air?

The only place i'd consider playing Matthews in midfield is on the right wing if we were short, I don't see him as a central midfielder.

We have Allen, Vaughan and Ledley who are all defensive midfielders. And you want to try converting a fullback to that position?

Yes but you can have 2 deeper midfield players, including one with a license to push forward to make things happen. The problem with Allen and Vaughan are they are good passes with good technique but aren't that physical or quick, which is of course due in part to their diminutive stature. Ledley and Collison (if fit) could of course perform that role.

I think we should put every players name into a hat, draw one out and have that player play as the defensive midfielder.
