Matthews has the potential to be better than Gunter, he needs to be somewhere getting regular games though.

Gunter is one f the players who will play when fit, the others are
Hennessey A Wiliams Ramsey Allen Bale Vokes Ledley
You can probably throw Chester in there at the moments and a choice between Davies and Taylor (Davies for me)
So that leaves 1 place between
J Williams Robson-Kanu King Cotterill G Wiliams Vaughan Huws
and quite a few more

What, played in a defence that let three goals in at home?

What, played in a defence that let three goals in at home? So 3 goals instantly the Right Back's fault? Riiiiiiiiiight. Got a number of friends who are Celtic fans and all said he had the best game of the season, many denoting him MOTM

I always use Matthews as a right winger in footy manager and he is really good there. Maybe they could use him in that position.

Anyone else feel Matthews is a bit of a lightweight and too much of a liability for international football? I've always thought his body language and general attitude seems a bit poor when he's played for us.
I think any player in the championship or even league one is a better option at RB. Richards for example. He needs to move to the championship or premier league to be anywhere near RB in my books. Look at how much Ledley has improved since joining Palace.

Only 23 years old so can't be written off an played over 130 games an has experience against some of the best teams in Europe. Not ready to start for Wales but definately a decent squad player. Needs a move now to a higher championship team or lower prem but does need to push on get regular games an decide what position is his best I think hes only gonna stagnate now at Celtic.

I've seen him have brilliant games for Celtic in Europe, including vs Barcelona. His international career has been disppointing so far, but he is young, so let's not write him off.

Up to Adam to make the full back spot his own.
The full backs are fighting for a place on the plane/train to France next year!

That's a massive step up and he should have moved to the English system over 2 years ago. Let's hope he gets plenty of game time.

One thing for sure he will get plenty of defensive practice at Sunderland. It seems that in general fitness levels increase from championship / Scottish Premier to the English premier so that has got to be the lads advantage. He has had European opportunities with Celtic and so perhaps now is the time to test himself in this division. Wish him all the best and yes if he is successful he will be challenging for that RB position in France.

It's interesting to see how Adam Matthews and Jazz Richards are doing opposite things - and yet both should enhance their international prospects. Jazz has moved to a lower level and will gain the game time he has to get to be in contention for Wales forthcoming qualifiers - and, hopefully, the tournament beyond. Matthews will probably play fewer games for Sunderland - but his performances can now be properly evaluated, which is always problematical in the Scottish leagues.
Although right now Matthews is third in the pecking order behind Gunter and Richards he's probably the best attacking full back/wing back of the three. Very well though Gunter and Richards have played defensively in the campaign to date, neither have entirely convinced going forward - and this is a dimension Matthews could add. But that opportunity will only arise if he can show that he match or surpass the defensive solidity of the other two. At least now he will have a proper chance to show what he's capable of.

He'll have his work cut out for him at that shower but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Hope he gets the game time. It's class to see our fringe players in demand!

Who's the Sunderland right back? Is it that Vergini guy? I think he'll play, not sure why they would bother playing £2m for a right back if he wasn't going to get games.

It's hard to really comprehend how piss poor Ellis Short has run Sunderland. They seem to consistently run at a loss year on year whilst never improving. Wouldn't shock me to see him get benched, hope I'm wrong!

Well they've wasted so much money on players that haven't performed, most noticeably Gyan, Rodwell and Giaccherini, that it wouldn't surprise me to see him wasted on the bench.

Matthews is still only 23 but it feels like it's about time he moved to the EPL. Especially if he wants to stay in Wales contention. He has gained some valuable Euro-experience with Celtic now. Hopefully he can really kick on in his career now.
Long-term, I can see Gunter playing CB for us (when Ash and Collins have retired) so there may be a battle for 1st choice RB between Matthews, Richards and Henley.

If Matthews cements a place in the Sunderland side, then Gunter might have to get used to the bench as backup for CB/RB by the time the Euros come around. Would be excellent for us if Matthews steps up a level. Especially cos we're playing 5-3-2, the problem with our fullbacks is that they are not that great going forward. In the modern game the ideal wing back is someone more like Ashley Young, Daley Blind, Elmahamedy etc who can really contribute in attack. There's far more chance of Matthews becoming that kind of player than Gunter (much as we all love Gunter).

I agree with you squatter1, with the caveat that we can't afford to compromise on our new-found defensive resilience at all. Matthews has got it all to prove on that front - with both Gunter and Richards ahead of him as things stand.
After the Andorra match I criticized our setup on the basis that it put so much onus on our wing backs - with no natural wing backs in our squad. From an offensive perspective that critique still stands - but what I didn't appreciate was the contribution that the new formation would make to our defensive capability. Mind you I don't think I'm alone in not realising the total turnaround from the shambolic outfit up to the second Serbia game to the mean machine we've shape shifted into.
