Potentially a decent move for him. Sunderland have been a car crash for a couple of seasons though. Are they on the up? Considering they're buying SPL players, probably not. At least Adam is in a decent shop window now though.

Looks a good move but time will tell. Unfortunately no matter what he does he'll never get in our first XI with the greatest right back on the planet ahead of him.

Think its good move, better competitive games week in week out.

Move to Bristol City probably too late to make Wales EURO squad.
Could resurrect his career though.

Yeah probably a bit late, he could nick a place ahead of Henley or Dummett though? I was a bit surprised to see that he only turned 24 in January!

Out for up to 10 weeks with a hamstring injury. (source Dragosoccer)
Shame as he would of been close to a call up for the Moldova game

He's a lucky boy to get a contract at championship level again.

Why is he lucky.
Had the balls to go on trial and has impressed enough for a contract.
Well earnt not lucky

A surprise starter for Charlton tonight. It would be great if his career has a bit of a rennaissace from here, we need someone to cover right back.

Could he sneak into the 23 next summer?
He could cover left-back.

A possibility but would need a great second half of season

How many appearances has he had for Charlton so far? Any idea if he's playing well?

How many appearances has he had for Charlton so far? Any idea if he's playing well? Was an unused sub against us despite a huge amount of injury problems leading to them changing from a 4-4-2 diamond to a 3-5-2. Certainly thought he'd have better attacking instincts than Chris Solly who did play RWB.

How many appearances has he had for Charlton so far? Any idea if he's playing well? Four games, three of which were starts and one was a late substitute appearance. Averaging 6.27 a game on whoscored, which is the second lowest of any Charlton player this season ahead only of 19 year old Albie Morgan. By no means is that the best way of rating a player, especially in just 271 minutes, but it's generally a good indicator.

Given Connor Roberts' form he just needs to stay fit and playing semi-regularly to get in the squad, you'd think.

If Matthews keeps playing for Charlton surely Gunter will need to move in Jan or nail down a spot for Reading otherwise he will be at risk.

Looked solid defensively and useful going forward last night against Swansea. Carry on and it’s got to be a call up in March.

I thought Connor had a great game but Adam was very close to matching him. If anything, Adam looked the better defender but Roberts the better going forward. I would take these two if they both stay fit. Gunter for me is in the same bracket as Williams, it would be a nostalgia pick rather than a footballing one.

In fairness, gunter regaining his place has coincided directly with an excellent run of form for reading and their fans are full of praise for gunts. If gunter was still with reading's u23s, I would agree. But it's difficult to drop him when he's in such good form. The problem we have is that there's four rights backs all of a similar quality with no outstanding option.

Glad to see Matthews playing. Bowyer is getting good at bringing Welsh players back into the fold.

Without sounding harsh surely he’s not on our radar anymore. If Roberts gets injured will we call on the lad nearly on 100 caps, give a chance to a lad who could get 100 caps, or someone who was dropped from a bit part role in the squad years ago?
I would compare him to Dummett but at least he plays Premier League football most weeks. I was a fan of Matthews 7 or 8 years ago, he never made the position his own though and we moved on.

Hate the attitude that if someone doesn't establish themselves as a young player they're not worth bothering with. As Danny Gabbidon said on Elis James' podcast not long ago, Matthews always had the talent but questionable professionalism let him down. If he's grown up a bit, and is playing regularly at a good standard he should absolutely be considered alongside Roberts and Gunter. The aim is to win football matches not create celebrity legacies.

I think it’s too late for him. He’d need a Premier League run to even get a look in. He’s just been in the wilderness too long, we gave him enough time and never did anything with it.

I think it depends honestly. Let's say Gunter & C.Roberts are on long term injuries, Neco likely comes in but who after Neco? Probably would be Matthews in that case. He's played internationals and is a senior pro playing regularly in the Championship. Without a few injuries I can't see it happening, but he wouldn't be a terrible option to rely on I don't think

I agree in an injury crisis he could come in as cover but as standard I think he’s done.
